A new model suggests that inhospitable hydrodgen-sulphide rich waters could have delayed the spread of complex life forms in ancient oceans.

A new model suggests that inhospitable hydrodgen-sulphide rich waters could have delayed the spread of complex life forms in ancient oceans. The research, published online this week in the journal Nature Communications, considers the composition of the oceans 550-700 million years ago and shows that oxygen-poor toxic conditions, which may have delayed the establishment of complex life, were controlled by the biological availability of nitrogen.

In contrast to modern oceans, data from ancient rocks indicates that the deep oceans of the early Earth contained little oxygen, and flipped between an iron-rich state and a toxic hydrogen-sulphide-rich state. The latter toxic sulphidic state is caused by bacteria that survive in low oxygen and low nitrate conditions. The study shows how bacteria using nitrate in their metabolism would have displaced the less energetically efficient bacteria that produce sulphide meaning that the presence of nitrate in the oceans prevented build-up of the toxic sulphidic state.

The model, developed by researchers at the University of Exeter in collaboration with Plymouth Marine Laboratory, University of Leeds, UCL (University College London) and the University of Southern Denmark, reveals the sensitivity of the early oceans to the global nitrogen cycle. It shows how the availability of nitrate, and feedbacks within the global nitrogen cycle, would have controlled the shifting of the oceans between the two oxygen-free states potentially restricting the spread of early complex life.

Dr Richard Boyle from the University of Exeter said: "Data from the modern ocean suggests that even in an oxygen-poor ocean, this apparent global-scale interchange between sulphidic and non-sulphidic conditions is difficult to achieve. We've shown here how feedbacks arising from the fact that life uses nitrate as both a nutrient, and in respiration, controlled the interchange between two ocean states. For as long as sulphidic conditions remained frequent, Earth's oceans were inhospitable towards complex life."

Today, an abundance of nitrate, in the context of an oxygenated ocean, prevents a reversion to the inhospitable environment that inhibited early life. Determining how the Earth's oceans have established long-term stability helps us to understand how modern oceans interact with life and also sheds light on the sensitivity of oceans to changes in composition.

In this March 24, 2009 file photo, Immaculata University history professor William Watson displays what he says are human remains that members of the Duffy's Cut Project unearthed in Malvern, Pa. The bones are from a mass grave for nearly five dozen 19th century Irish immigrants who died weeks after coming to Pennsylvania to build a railroad. (AP) ? The remains of a 19th-century Irish immigrant who researchers believe was murdered while building a Pennsylvania railroad will be reburied in his home country this weekend after being identified in part through a missing molar.

U.S. historians unearthed the bones of the young man thought to be 18-year-old John Ruddy near train tracks in suburban Philadelphia four years ago. On Saturday, they'll attend a re-interment for the railway worker more than 3,000 miles away at a cemetery in County Donegal.

"We can't help but think he would prefer to be buried there," said Bill Watson, a lead researcher on the team that found the remains.

Ruddy was among 57 Irishmen hired in 1832 to help build a stretch of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad known as Duffy's Cut. But the immigrants from Donegal, Tyrone and Derry died about six weeks after their arrival, and the railroad company never told their families.

Watson and his twin brother Frank, also a historian, led a team in a 10-year effort to research and dig up evidence of how the workers died in what is now a woodsy area behind homes in Malvern, about 20 miles west of Philadelphia.

Their conclusion? Many workers died of cholera and were dumped in a mass grave. Yet forensic evidence indicates several were homicide victims, likely killed by local vigilantes because of ethnic hatred or fear of the disease. Those immigrants, including Ruddy, were found buried separately.

The research team tentatively identified Ruddy based on a passenger list from the ship on which the immigrants traveled, and his small bone size. There was only one 18-year-old worker listed in railroad archives, Watson said.

Ruddy's jaw also had a genetic dental abnormality ? a missing molar. It's a trait that still runs in his family, according to Watson, who said modern-day Ruddys in Ireland contacted him after reading about the discovery. One Ruddy donated a DNA sample to confirm the identification in 2010, but researchers have not had the time nor the money to complete the analysis yet.

However, it's unlikely another body with that bone size and "super-rare" tooth anomaly would be found at the site, said University of Pennsylvania anthropologist Janet Monge, who works with the all-volunteer team.

Researchers are going ahead with Ruddy's burial this weekend because of a looming deadline for a documentary film crew that has been following the Duffy's Cut project. Ruddy's relatives, who could not be reached for comment, are expected to attend, as are other community members, Watson said.

"A lot of the people throughout Donegal see this as being important because they've all got stories in their family tree like this ? people who left for America and were never heard from again," said Watson, whose own ancestors also hail from the county.

Ruddy will not be buried in his homestead of Inishowen but in the nearby town of Ardara, where a grave was donated by a more recent immigrant to the U.S.

Vincent Gallagher, now president of the Irish Center in Philadelphia, said it was the least he could do for a fellow countryman who died on a lonely journey to build a better life. Gallagher himself emigrated from Donegal about 40 years ago, joining a slew of relatives who came before him.

"When I came to this country, there were a bunch of people waiting for me from my own family," said Gallagher, a landscaper. "But these people ? 57 of them ? they came here, they didn't know a soul."

The Watsons have been unable to identify the other alleged homicide victims because their bones indicate they were all in their 20s, leaving too many possibilities. However, their remains were reburied last year in a solemn ceremony at a suburban Philadelphia cemetery. The mass grave can't be excavated because of its proximity to active railroad tracks.

"The idea of somehow being able to get one of them back to Ireland, it seemed like a distant hope 10 years ago," said Watson, who is also a history professor at Immaculata University in Malvern, not far from where the workers died. "It's just a miracle, actually."

Where is Tornado Alley?

Blog

You may see the above chart with our preliminary finding that "tornado alley" (the gray shaded area) runs from Oklahoma City to Atlanta, and think we have it oriented the wrong way.? Traditionally, "tornado alley" has been defined as the Great Plains of the United States, from Texas up through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa.? However, our research at UAH, in coordination with P. Grady Dixon at Mississippi State University, shows otherwise.

We want to show where the area with the greatest risk for tornadoes is.? The Storm Prediction Center's tornado database goes all the way back to 1950, and includes almost every reported tornado since then.? However, there are some biases in that data that must be addressed first.

1.? Unreported tornadoes

The charts below show a) the total number of reported tornadoes, by year, in the U.S. since 1950, and b) the number of reported "significant" tornadoes, or those rated F2 through F5.

Figure 2
Note that the number of total reported tornadoes has been increasing for 60 years.? This is because many tornadoes, especially small, weak ones, used to go unreported.? Events changed our awareness of tornadoes:??Tornado research in the 1950's; developing a spotter network in the 1960's and 1970's;?Doppler radar?in the 1990's to tell us where to look; and then almost no tornado goes unreported anymore with widespread towercams and cameras on cell phones.? The number of reported tornadoes has gone up.? They were always there, we just did not know about a lot of them.? Especially the weak ones., especially in the southeastern U.S. where trees and?mountains block the view, and about half of all tornadoes occur at night.

The bottom chart shows reported significant tornadoes per year.? Notice they have been much more steady.? F2-F5 tornadoes are wider, last longer, and do more damage than F0-F1 tornadoes, so it is unlikely for very many of those to go unreported.? That is apparently the case, since the number of reported F2-F5 tornadoes has been steady or actually dropped.? So, in our study, we only use significant tornadoes, a steady dataset.

2.? Over-estimated tornadoes

Notice in the lower chart that the number of significant tornadoes decreased suddenly?after 1973.? The Fujita scale was invented in the early 1970's, and tornadoes 1950-1972 were rated retroactively, using newspaper clippings, etc. that, according to some researchers in Oklahoma (e.g., Schaefer and Edwards 1999; Brooks and Craven 2002), likely biased the damage estimates upward.? Therefore, in our study, we only look at data since 1973, since tornadoes were rated on the Fujita scale in near real-time.

3.? Results

The map below uses GIS software and the database of all significant (F2-F5) tornadoes, 1973-2011, to show the total path length (in km) of significant tornadoes, within 25 miles of a point, averaged annually.

Figure 4
Clearly, the largest threat for significant tornadoes since 1973 has been over Arkansas, Mississippi, and north and central Alabama, with a moderate threat extending from central Oklahoma to NW Georgia.?? The above map is influenced somewhat by the jumbo outbreak of April 27, 2011, but using data 1973-2010 shows a similar overall pattern.

Some may argue that significant tornadoes go unreported in Texas or Nebraska, or are under-rated because they only hit open grassland.? However, the number of tornado watches and warnings issued over the past 10-20 years shows that conditions were favorable for tornadoes, or tornadoes were indicated on radar, in roughly the same areas that our statistics show as tornado alley.? See below.

Figure 7
(Average annual number of tornado watches by county, SPC)

Figure 8
(Number of tornado warnings per year by location.? Marsh 2012)

There are other statistics that we use to show that our data are correct, but I will reserve those for the peer-reviewed journal article we will be submitting this spring.? That means these results are preliminary and have not been peer-reviewed.? However, you can be the judge of where tornado alley should be.?

9 Fantasy Baseball Catching Sleepers to Watch Closely in Spring Training

John Jaso has been in the MLB for some time now, and his name has never been associated with the words "fantasy stud."

But the 28-year-old made huge strides in his offensive game last season, hitting a career-best .276 with 10 home runs and an .850 OPS.

One thing to remember is that Jaso spent his season platooning between positions for Seattle, and he saw only 361 plate appearances last season.

Despite playing half his games at Safeco Field, Jaso put up solid numbers for a catcher. After being traded this offseason to Oakland, his numbers could get even better.

Jaso should have full rein of the starter's spot in Oakland, and he's already proved he can hit in a pitcher's park.

The only thing to worry about is whether 2012 was a fluke for him. As long as he doesn't have any major issues this spring, Jaso will be worthy of his sleeper title in 2013.

OTG Lays The Foundation For A Connected Airport That Speaks Your Language, Whatever That Language May Be

iPad GUI PSDOTG, the restaurateur that made waves when it installed free access iPads in some of the world's busiest international airport hubs last year, is improving its existing system with the deployment of a translation system that will allow it to provide translation of its restaurant menus in 13 different languages. The system is already live in test deployments at locations like Toronto's Pearson airport, and CEO Rick Blatstein tells me it's already having a positive impact on sales at OTG-run restaurants.

Washington state baristas arrested for stripping at drive-thru

(Reuters) - Three baristas accused of giving customers peep shows along with their coffee have been arrested in Washington state, accused of operating an adult cabaret without a license from the drive-thru windows of two Grab-N-Go coffee shops, police said on Wednesday.

The three women, who were not immediately identified, were taken into custody in the city of Everett following a two-month undercover operation that was launched after complaints from the public, Everett police officials said.

"Citizens complained that these locations served more than just coffee," Everett police Lieutenant James Duffy said. Everett is about 30 miles north of Seattle.

"Indeed, our investigation uncovered exhibition and exposure, which is outside the confines of the law," Duffy said. "During the investigation, video surveillance showed that at times coffee or drinks were not served, but shows were paid for and given."

Everett police spokesman Aaron Snell said the three women, who worked at two different Grab-N-Go stands near the city's main thoroughfare, were accused of exposing their entire bodies at the drive-thru window.

"These stands are on a major road. They are in parking lots of businesses. Not like they are fully hidden from sight. We received many complaints," he said.

Snell said the owners of the Grab-N-Go stands had not been arrested or charged in connection with the case, which was still under investigation. The three women were being interviewed by detectives, he said.

He said it was not clear how customers became aware that the baristas were willing to strip for money.

"Word gets out," he said.
