Combat troops exposed to blasts from explosive devices may not show signs of traumatic brain injury until months later. Likewise, those exposed to chemicals like the Vietnam-era Agent Orange may find themselves battling a variety of neurological problems, while those exposed to asbestos ? widely used in military applications between World War II and Vietnam ? are at high risk for mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer caused by asbestos fibers in the tissues. Acknowledging the potential health risks of military service, a variety of medical, legal and social services have been introduced to help active duty personnel, veterans and their families to cope with the aftereffect of the many health risks caused by military service. On most military bases, counselors and social workers are available to offer assistance to spouses and families left behind when a soldier is away, and these services are also available to help returning soldiers cope with the transition back to family life. Services supporting active duty personnel include substance abuse and mental health services, and ongoing counseling, therapy and rehabilitation for those injured in combat or accidents while serving. Veterans, too, are eligible for a variety of services to help them cope with the aftermath of experiences during their service, including legal advice, referrals for social services, and support groups to deal with ongoing mental and physical health issues. For those with life threatening illnesses such as mesothelioma from long-term asbestos exposure or exposure to military-mandated toxic substances, services include legal advocacy to file claims for assistance, as well as specialized health services and family support. Cain is a model of unbelief and fratracide. (Genesis 4:8-10)-- gives evidence that Cain was a murderer. Abortion is murder in the eyes of God. In (John 10:10)-- Jesus exhorts---I came to give life and give life abundantly. Although Scripture nowhere mentions the word "abortion", there can be a deducible inferences taken from Biblical Revelation regarding abortion. Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium absolutely forbids abortion. (Psalm 22:10-11) and (Wisdom 7:1-6)-- give affirmative Biblical evidence regarding the formation of man by God. Tradition of the Church Fathers absolutely condemns abortion. Abortion was forbidden in the early foundation of the Church. For the past 15 years, AVANCE-Austin has worked to break the cycle of low educational attainment and generational poverty in Austin?s at-risk communities. On October 17th, AVANCE supporters convened at the Driskill Hotel for AVANCE-Austin?s Annual Fundraising Luncheon honoring District Judge Orlinda Naranjo.

Throughout her tenure in public service, Naranjo has strived to ensure justice for underserved communities. ?Moms who have gone through the AVANCE program are successful because they?ve dreamed bigger and better things for their children. They have made a commitment to take their children down the path of success,? Judge Naranjo expressed during her event speech.

At the luncheon attendees heard firsthand from Angelica Mendez, 2011 AVANCE Parent Graduate, and celebrated AVANCE?s comprehensive family support services. Mendez, reflected on AVANCE?s impact at the luncheon, ?I learned how to be a better parent, to make toys and play with my daughter. After AVANCE, my daughter was ready for Pre-K. Her teachers trust her to do errands and she knows all her colors, numbers and letters. I am very proud of her.?

AVANCE?s free Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP) is a weekly three-hour parenting and early childhood education class where parents learn the importance of their role as their child?s first and most important teacher. The AVANCE PCEP also offers transportation, meals, advocacy, and home visits, making it one of the most comprehensive bilingual family intervention models in the nation. AVANCE-Austin augments the PCEP with an additional hour of ESL instruction prior to starting the traditional three-hour parenting class.

During the 2011-2012 program year, AVANCE-Austin administered the PCEP to 100 parents and 114 children, at three sites located in the Austin Independent School District and one community center. Upon graduation, 96% of parent participants were reading to their children at least three times a week, 81% demonstrated increased knowledge of child development and parenting and 96% reported planning to continue their own education by pursuing advanced ESL, GED, and college classes.

Richard J. Noriega, AVANCE?s National President and CEO, praised AVANCE-Austin?s Executive Director, Sofia Casini during his remarks, ?Sofia is a champion and her program is flourishing. The future is bright for AVANCE in Austin because of their great board and dedicated staff!?

10 emerging writers receive $50K Whiting awards

NEW YORK (AP) ? "Middlesex" author Jeffrey Eugenides doesn't remember everything about the night he was given a Whiting Writers' Award, but he has never forgotten how the honor received early in his career helped make his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel possible.

Eugenides, who on Tuesday night was to present the award to this year's 10 recipients, is one of many top American authors and playwrights who early in their careers won the honor. It is given to those who exhibit "exceptional talent and promise."

"I remember it was a very rainy night and on my way to the ceremony the back of my trousers became sopping wet," Eugenides, who won in 1993, said during a recent telephone interview. "It was a good way to forestall any moment of grandiosity because I assumed that everyone was looking at my soggy bottoms."

He said he was so excited to win that he has forgotten who handed him his Whiting. But he considers the prize the "first vote of confidence" from someone besides his publisher and values the award's "extreme practical" value and how it made him feel "part of the writerly world."

The prize money gave him priceless time to work on "Middlesex," his second book and a major critical and commercial success. The Whiting award, established in 1985 by the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation, is now worth $50,000.

Each year, 10 prizes are given to a combination of authors, poets and playwrights. Past winners also have included Tony Kushner, Jonathan Franzen, David Foster Wallace, Mark Doty and Michael Cunningham.

Four playwrights, three fiction writers, two poets and one nonfiction writers were in the class of 2012. One of the winners, playwright Danai Gurira, also has a career as an actress. She has won an Obie and a Helen Hayes award for her stage work and her television credits include "Treme" and "The Walking Dead."

Other playwrights announced Tuesday were Samuel D. Hunter, an Obie winner for "A Bright New Boise"; Mona Mansour and Meg Miroshnik. Alan Heathcock, whose story collection "Volt" was a finalist for the Barnes & Noble Discover Prize, was among the fiction writers receiving a Whiting.

"As a playwright, so often any accolades I get are inexorably tied to a specific production of a play," Hunter says. "So to receive an award based solely on my writing, and to be validated alongside poets and novelists and non-fiction writers, is deeply meaningful."

Novelists Anthony Marra and Hanna Pylvainen, poets Atsuro Riley and Danai Gurira and nonfiction author Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts also were honored.

"The award comes as a bolt from the blue," says Rhodes-Pitt, who has just started working on her second book. "The Whiting gives great affirmation ? and courage to continue."
