Bachelor's degree: Has it lost its edge and its value?

Undervalued and overpriced, the beleaguered bachelor's degree is losing its edge as the hallmark of an educated, readily employable American.

The children of white middle-class, college-educated parents, Hugh Green and Turner Jenkins are just the kind of kids everyone would expect to be stepping out into the world one sunny June day, bachelor's degrees in hand. But they both veered from the traditional American educational route.

One decided that a bachelor's was never going to be enough, while the other concluded it was unnecessary.

Mr. Green enrolled in an accelerated program that will keep him at Emory University in Atlanta for a fifth year and earn him a master's degree. Mr. Jenkins is immersed in a culinary training program in Gaithersburg, Md., that he hopes will launch his career as a chef.

Once the hallmark of an educated and readily employable adult, the bachelor's degree is losing its edge. Quicker, cheaper programs offer attractive career route alternatives while the more prestigious master's is trumping it, making it a mere steppingstone.

Studies show that people with four-year college degrees earn more money than those without over their lifetime, that they are more likely to find jobs and, once employed, are almost twice as likely to be selected for on-the-job training.

This has prompted a stampede through college and university gates.

But studies are like photographs: They record the past. They say nothing about the clear and present danger that the bachelor's degree is losing value.

"As more and more people get a bachelor's degree, it becomes more commonplace," says Linda Serra Hagedorn, immediate past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education and associate dean and professor at Iowa State University in Iowa City.

And, she adds, "not all bachelor's are equal." In many communities around the country, the bachelor's is not enough to make you stand out. " 'A bachelor's in what?' that's the question," Professor Hagedorn says.

"Further blurring the line of what a bachelor's degree is and what it really means," she notes, are new attitudes and options in postsecondary education, such as the explosion of online and for-profit institutions, the proliferation of graduate degrees, and a much publicized malaise over the quality and value of undergraduate education.

"A bachelor's is what a high school diploma used to be," suggests Caryn McTighe Musil of the American Association of Colleges and Universities.

Financial journalist Dan Dorfman dies at 82

NEW YORK (AP) ? Financial journalist Dan Dorfman, known for moving stock prices in the 1990s with his comments on CNBC, has died. He was 82.

According to the family, he died Saturday in New York of cardiogenic shock, a heart condition.

Dorfman's influential market comments on the cable financial news channel could propel and sink stocks. He worked there until 1996, when he suffered a stroke.

That same year, he was fired as a Money magazine columnist over an ethics controversy involving a stock promoter, but he was never charged by regulators.

The controversy stemmed from Dorfman's refusal to tell his editor at the magazine who his confidential sources were amid reports that authorities were investigating his relationship with stock promoter Donald Kessler. Kessler later pleaded guilty to two counts of securities fraud and one count of tax evasion.

With a print and TV career that spanned decades, Dorfman also penned the "Heard on the Street" column in The Wall Street Journal, reported for CNN and wrote for USA Today, New York magazine and Esquire.

Dorfman turned to the Internet late in his career, first with a stock research company, JagNotes.com, in 1999. He blogged for the Huffington Post until last year.

The native New Yorker is survived by his wife, Harriet.

First CyanogenMod 9 nightly build available for international Samsung Galaxy S III

The first nightly build of popular custom ROM CyanogenMod 9 for the Samsung Galaxy S III  is now available for download. Following the release of several unofficial builds since the S III's international launch in late May, the first official nightly is available at the CyanogenMod download site. CyanogenMod 9, which is based on the Android Open Source Project, offers an experience closer to stock Android 4.0, as opposed to Samsung's TouchWiz UX.

Initial feedback from early adopters has been positive, and the list of known issues point out only a couple of minor issues with FM radio and camera flash. But as with any unofficial custom ROM, you'll need a rooted phone with a custom recovery to flash this, and you'll void your warranty in the process, so proceed at your own risk. We should also note that this ROM is for the international Galaxy S III only -- that's the one that's on sale in Europe and Asia right now, with the product code GT-i9300. In Egypt, little enthusiasm for presidential finalists

The winner of Egypt's presidential election may be known by Monday evening. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

The second voting day Sunday for Egypt?s first democratically elected president had a markedly low turnout, a showing that many attributed to disappointment with both lackluster candidates.

Scattered voters strolled into the Victoria School voting center without delay and quickly registered their choices for the two finalists in the presidential run-off: Ahmed Shafiq,?a Mubarak-era official, and Mohammed Morsi, an Islamist engineer.?

?They hate them both,? said Wael Ghoneimi, owner of an advertising agency.? ?It?s not the election we were waiting for for?30 years.??

Despite their individual preferences, all voters were concerned about post-election violence if Shafiq, the former prime minster,?should win.?

The presidential elections in Egypt are currently underway, just after the Egyptian high court this week suspended the nation's parliament. NBC News' Richard Engel reports on the recent developments in both Egypt and Syria.

?If Shafik wins, the situation will be very critical,? says Kareem Ali, a gynecologist and a supporter of Morsi, candidate of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood.??

Physical therapist Zain Abdine also thinks the Muslim Brotherhood would protest a Shafiq victory.??They ask for democracy but they don?t play by the rules.? I fear there is going to be some violence in the street among the Islamists (if Shafiq wins).? But I have great faith in our armed forces.? They will be able to control whatever happens.?

Right now, the ruling Military Council is trying to do just that.? Reportedly, they will declare a new constitution annex defining the powers of the new president in the next two days.? Egypt?s former constitution had been suspended and was supposed to have been determined by a constitutional assembly.? Because the Muslim Brotherhood tried to dominate the 100-member constitutional assembly, plans to form the decision-making body broke down twice and effectively left the country without a functioning constitution.??

Cairo dispute triggers gunfight as Egypt votes

The constitution would have determined the right of the president to appoint ministers and other state officials and the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches of government.

The country could not be in greater political disarray.? A president will have been elected but without defined authority.? The composition of a constitutional assembly will likely be determined by the military.?

The predominantly Islamist, democratically elected parliament was dissolved by a recent Supreme Court decision.??The Muslim Brotherhood disputes the verdict, arguing that the ruling military council does not have the power to implement the court?s verdict.? The parliament building is now surrounded by military forces to prevent legislators from entering without permission.???

People have practiced democracy a lot since the revolution.? They have already voted five times.? But practice has not made perfect.? The results of two of those elections have already been overturned.? No wonder they head to the ballot box reluctantly, or not at all, as they enter what could be the beginning of a new chapter of turbulence rather than the democratic transition that reflected their deepest hopes.???
