Facebook, 'Grey's Anatomy' win GLAAD awards

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? GLAAD likes Facebook.

The social networking site won the Special Recognition Award at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's 23rd annual Media Awards.

Other honorees at Saturday's ceremony in San Francisco included "Grey's Anatomy" for drama series, "Days of Our Lives" for daily drama series, Max J. Rosenthal of The Huffington Post for digital journalism article, Wells Fargo for the Corporate Leader Award and "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes for the Golden Gate Award.

The awards salute fair, accurate and inclusive representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives in the media. Other winners from among this year's 35 categories were honored at ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles earlier this year.

LONDON (AP) ? More than 1,000 boats will sail down the River Thames on Sunday in a flotilla tribute to Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne that organizers are calling the biggest pageant on the river for 350 years.

Despite cool, drizzly weather, hundreds of thousands of people lined the riverbanks between Hammersmith and Tower Bridge in London, feting the British monarch whose longevity has given her the status of the nation's favorite grandmother.

Spectators cheered the queen and members of her family as they arrived for their trip aboard a flower-bedecked royal barge, accompanied by skiffs, barges, narrow boats, motor launches, row boats and sailing vessels from around the world.

The queen wore a silver and white dress and matching coat, embroidered with gold, silver and ivory spots and embellished with Swarovski crystals to evoke the river, as she and her husband Prince Philip were ferried by motor launch to the barge Spirit of Chartwell

Prince William and his wife the Duchess of Cambridge ? he in his Royal Air Force uniform, she in a red Alexander McQueen dress ? and Prince Harry were among senior royals accompanying the queen on the river trip.

Hundreds of people ignored the persistent rain and camped out overnight to secure prime riverside spots. Crowds swelled into the thousands Sunday, with revelers in hats, flags, leggings and rain ponchos adorned with the Union flag mixing with burger and cotton candy vendors along the 7-mile (11-kilometer) route.

"It would have been wonderful if it had been sunny like last Sunday but we have come prepared," said 57-year-old Christine Steele. "We have got blankets, brollies (umbrellas), flags and bunting. We even got our glittery Union Jack hats and wigs, and the Champagne is on ice."

The spectacle is a tribute to Britain's past ? monarchs used the river as their main highway for centuries, and naval power built the island nation's once-great empire ? as well as to its abiding love of boats and the sea.

River processions were once common in London. The last comparable royal pageant was held for King Charles II in 1662, when diarist Samuel Pepys recorded boats so numerous he could "see no water."

Sunday's flotilla will include more than three dozen "Dunkirk Little Ships," private boats that rescued thousands of British soldiers from the beaches of France after the German invasion in 1940 ? a defeat that became a major victory for wartime morale.

The four-day Diamond Jubilee celebrations also include thousands of street parties across the country on Sunday. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, joined hundreds of people for a damp al fresco lunch on Piccadilly, one of London's main shopping streets.

Not everyone in Britain is celebrating. The anti-monarchist group Republic held a riverbank protest Sunday to oppose the wave of jubilee-mania.

"People are sick and tired of being told they must celebrate 60 years of one very privileged, very remote and very uninspiring head of state," said the group's chief executive, Graham Smith. "The hereditary system is offensive to all the democratic values this country has fought for in the past."

Jubilee celebrations kicked off Saturday with a royal day at the races, as the queen watched a horse with the courtly name of Camelot win the Epsom Derby.

The 86-year-old monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, visited Epsom racecourse south of the capital for the Derby, one of the year's biggest horse racing meetings.

The queen is a racing fan and horse breeder who has attended the Derby for decades and reads the Racing Post each day over breakfast, although unlike many of her subjects she does not gamble.

On Monday the queen will attend a pop concert in front of Buckingham Palace featuring Elton John and Paul McCartney.

Jubilee events end Tuesday with a religious service at St. Paul's Cathedral, a carriage procession through the streets of London and the queen's appearance with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the palace balcony.

The queen took the throne in 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI, and most Britons have known no other monarch.

Prime Minister David Cameron ? the 12th British leader of the queen's reign ? paid tribute to the monarch's "extraordinary level of physical energy, mental energy, and above all devotion to her people, to the institutions of this country, to the way our democracy works."

In a jubilee gift from Britain's politicians, lawmakers from the three main parties have backed a motion calling for the tower housing Big Ben ? the beloved London bell that chimes the quarter hour ? to be renamed the Elizabeth Tower in the queen's honor. It's currently called the Clock Tower.

While many Britons used the long weekend to relax ? and an estimated 2 million left the country on vacation ? writers and religious leaders used the occasion to reflect on how Britain has changed over the queen's reign, from a war-scarred imperial power to a middle-sized power with oversized cultural clout.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, spiritual head of the Anglican Church, expressed a widely held view when he said Britain had been lucky to have Elizabeth as monarch throughout a period of rapid change.

"It seems to me that what her importance has been for most people in this country has been as a sign of stability, a sign of some kind of security," Williams said in a jubilee video message.

World stock markets in Trouble World News | International ...

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW ? BANGKOK: World stock markets fell Friday as weakness in Chinese manufacturing suggested the slowdown in the world?s No. 2 economy may worsen, unsettling investors ahead of crucial U.S. employment figures. The state affiliated China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said its purchasing managers index fell 2.9 percentage points to 50.4 per cent in May, just above the 50 level that signifies expansion in manufacturing. The index was at 53.3 in April. A second survey by HSBC that is more focused on exporters showed manufacturing continuing to contract.

The Chinese data comes ahead of the monthly U.S. employment report which gives a strong albeit lagging indication of the strength of the recovery in the world?s No. 1 economy. With Europe struggling and China slowing, investors are hoping the U.S. might provide some positive news that could break the recent slide in global stock markets.

European shares were mixed in early trading. Britain?s FTSE 100 rose 0.2 per cent to 5,322.69 but Germany?s DAX lost 1.1 per cent at 6,198.78. France?s CAC-40 slipped 0.3 per cent to 3,006.84.

U.S. futures augured a lower opening on Wall Street. Dow Jones industrial futures fell 0.6 per cent to 12,315 and S&P 500 futures were 0.8 per cent lower at 1,299.20.

The sell-off began earlier in the day in Asia. Japan?s Nikkei 225 index fell 1.2 per cent to close at 8,440.25 and South Korea?s Kospi dropped 0.5 per cent to 1,835.51.

Australia?s S&P/ASX 200 index lost 0.3 per cent to 4,063.90. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, India and New Zealand were also lower.

Hong Kong?s Hang Seng ended 0.4 per cent lower at 18,558.34 after briefly posting gains amid hopes for stimulus measures by the Chinese government. Mainland Chinese shares were flat.

?The (Chinese) data is so bad, and so clearly points to slowdown of growth momentum, that it will likely help convince policy-makers that the economy needs more stimulus,? Dariusz Kowalczyk, senior economist at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong, said in an email.

?We still do not expect announcement of a big number ?package? like during the Lehman crisis, but rather a series of measures to stimulate infrastructure spending and lending.?

Meanwhile, there is still no agreement over how to solve Europe?s debt crisis. Stronger countries like Germany want governments to cut spending, but voters in weaker countries like Greece have shown they are in no mood for more fiscal pain.

The head of the European Central Bank told European Union leaders Thursday that the 17-country euro currency union is unsustainable in its current form.

The euro has fallen nearly 7 per cent in May as Europe?s debt crisis intensified. The likelihood of Greece leaving the euro grew in early May when parties opposed to the terms of the country?s financial rescue won at the polls. New elections are planned for next month.

This week, Spain became the new focus of the crisis after its borrowing rates soared to nearly 7 per cent, a level that is considered unsustainable for a country to continue funding itself by selling bonds to investors. Greece, Portugal and Ireland were forced to ask for financial aid after their rates went over 7 per cent.

In the U.S. on Thursday, the government said the number of people applying for unemployment benefits rose to a five-week high. Additionally, private businesses added 133,000 jobs last month, a figure disappointed most economists.

When the government issues its critical report Friday on May employment, economists expect it to say that employers added 158,000 jobs. That would be better than in the past two months but far below the winter?s pace of 252,000 jobs per month. They also expect no change in the unemployment rate, which was 8.1 per cent in April.

?Unemployment and nonfarm payroll will be key,? said Jackson Wong, vice-president of Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. ?We are already prepared for a weak number because of yesterday?s reports. So I think now everything is down to the news from Europe.?

Airline stocks benefited from falling oil prices, which makes fuelling their fleets less expensive. China Southern Airlines gained 4.8 per cent while South Korea?s Asiana Airlines jumped 5.5 per cent.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 57 cents to $85.97 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.29 to settle at $86.53 in New York on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2341 from $1.2366 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 78.35 yen from 78.33 yen.

Statcounter: Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer in global browser share for the first time

Chrome's share of internet use just inched past Microsoft's Internet Explorer last month, laying claim to king of the web browsers. Statcounter's analytics measured that 32.43 percent of its 15 billion page-views were done on Google's browser, while Internet Explore took 32.12 percent and Firefox 25.55 percent. According to StatCounter, an upswing of over 0.6 percent to Firefox (from Internet Explorer) helped Chrome claim the top spot. The month rounds off some impressive growth for Chrome in 2012, which claimed second place in Statcounter's results at the start of the year. Now, if Google could just get that mobile version out to more handsets, we could see how it fares against small-screen competition.

May was bananas ? like totally crazy, not the delightful yellow fruit. I had the flu, I was on jury duty, I took on more work projects for my business (YAY!) which often meant working late into the night (boo). And, while we got off to a rip-roaring start creating our own recipes, the schedule of testing, photographing, documenting, writing and posting got the better of me. May also marked the first full month I was soda-free. I was never?too?big a soda drinker ? just enjoyed one diet Pepsi per day with lunch ? but I thought I?d see how I felt if I cut out the high caffeine and chemicals. And it?s good, no more afternoon jitters. I replaced the soda with iced tea just in time for lovely, sunny weather. My favorites are Good Earth Citrus Mate Energy Tea or good ol? Lipton with a wedge of lemon. I still like a little caffeine help that comes with black tea, so what?s your favorite tea on ice?
