Lane-keeping app makes any car smarter

You don't have to be rich to get the latest and best in advanced in-car gadgetry. A smartphone app gives any old rust bucket two key safety features you would normally expect to see only in luxury vehicles: a lane-departure warning and driver-fatigue alerts.

In cars like Toyota's high-end Lexus range, lane-departure systems use cameras and radar to warn drivers when they drift out of a traffic lane. Cameras trained on the driver's eyes can sense the kind of blinking that indicates you are drowsy, telling you to take a break.

Andrew Campbell and colleagues at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire have packed similar capabilities into an Android app called CarSafe. With a Google Galaxy Nexus phone mounted on the windscreen, the front camera points at the driver, tracking head pose, gaze direction and blink rate. If the driver seems drowsy, a coffee cup appears on the screen and the phone bleeps.

The back-facing camera is trained on the road and the app checks you are at a safe distance from the car in front and also checks you are not weaving outside the white lines of the traffic lane.

The technological challenge is not trivial, says Campbell, as existing cellphones can't access both cameras at once. So the team has written code that continually switches between the two cameras ? but that means they can only analyse scenes at a rate of eight frames per second, reducing the app's ability to assess safety when the car is travelling at speed.

"But the next generation of phones will allow software to access both cameras simultaneously, removing that bottle neck," predicts Campbell. "And with advent of quad core and 16 core phones in the future I would expect 20 to 30 fps [frames per second] on each camera."

Track tests in a Subaru Outback, Ford Focus, a Hyundai sedan and a Toyota pickup truck have been encouraging ? and the team are now moving on to "realistic" road tests. If it works, Campbell thinks such safety-centric apps "will be common in two or three years". The research was presented at the UbiComp conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, earlier this month.

Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at the UK's Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in Birmingham, notes that apps which monitor your driving style for insurance purposes are already emerging ? measuring how harshly you accelerate, brake and corner for instance. He says the lane departure warning element of CarSafe could be incorporated in such apps ? though he doubts the usefulness of its tiredness monitoring capability. "We think it's a little bit late by the time an app tells you you're tired," he says.

My ideas for Band 1:

With regards to structure, I'd figured on two lead guitarists, with one singing (that'd be Izzie), a bassist, and a drummer.

With regards to sound, I was thinking pretty much death metal, in the vein of Suffocation.

I am not, in fact, a woman. Apparently, I have to affirm this. :v

Talent: your own personal resource - Thrifty Living Today

?

One of the tenets of Thrift is to recognize our resources; to identity them, to care for them, and to use them for ourselves and for others.

?

Welcome to Thrifty Living Today. A special way of life for the Twenty-first Century.

My name is Lori Blatzheim and I am your host.

What is a talent?

It is a gift, an ability to do something well.

Sometimes people hide their abilities. They don?t want to show off. They are so ?busy? doing other things, or working, or not knowing what to do with this gift, which they don?t bother to acknowledge. They may think that everyone has this ability and not mention it to anyone.

Here are some examples:

1.????? You may have the ability to cook a fine meal. You think anyone can do this, but you are wrong. With time and experience, you develop your learning of food; what dishes taste good together, what to serve with certain cuts of meat, what makes a healthful vegetarian meal, how to bring a complete dinner to the table with all dishes ready at the same time.

2.????? You may have a musical ability. You can play an instrument. You know the notes and melody, how sounds fit together on the scale, how a song with many voices can blend in for the greater good of the piece.

3.????? Can you put oil in your car, fix a flat tire, dig your vehicle out of a snow bank, listen to the sound of the engine, check the tires, and realize something is wrong with the car? What gives you the ability? Is it from knowledge, experience, interest in how a car is put together, or something more? Trust me, there are a lot of us out there who jump into our vehicle and expect it to perform perfectly???and it doesn?t.

4.????? You may have a sense of color. You inherently know what shades, tints, pigments, work together. You enjoy and celebrate the ability to dress a room with colors that just seem to go together. People entering a room enjoy the way items go together. They feel more comfortable, seldom recognizing that it is color that brings it together.

These talents are important. They are personal resources. You can bring a special ability to your life and that of others. Don?t hide it. Don?t flaunt it. Use it.

Think about yourself. Your gifts may lead to a family that would rather eat your food than a neighborhood take out, that may be entertained by your musical ability, that is sure the car is working well and can be trusted while driving down the road, and that the choice of paint color will enhance a room.

What does a talent have to do with Thrift?

Think about the examples above.

The good cook can select those vegetables and fruits that are in season and include them in the meal. Vegetarian foods may be grouped together to provide a thoughtful and complete meal. Less expensive meats may be prepared so they taste just as good as the expensive cuts. Dinner does not depend on a neighborhood take-out.

Music in the home can result in home entertainment. Family members appreciate each other. Children and adults may join choirs, bands, or even orchestras.

How much does it cost to have a car towed? I suppose it depends on the distance, and how the car is functioning. Think about it. The person who keeps the vehicle in good, workable condition, or knows when it is time for service, is a real asset.

What if you paint a room and then discover that the color is wrong, wrong, wrong! How much does it cost to paint a room? How much work has been done? Think about it. If someone in the home has a real color sense, they are a real asset.

Helping others

You have a special gift. Do you want to share your abilities with others?

From a monetary standpoint, you may be able to make money from it. Use it if you need the income or if friends and family will benefit.

But????..you may also be able to help someone who lacks your talent and ability. Whether you travel down the road of volunteering publicly or just helping out a friend.

Don?t sell yourself short. Whether it is sewing on a button or badge, entertaining others with musical ability, or preparing a meal for those less fortunate, you do have talent. What can you do with your abilities?

?

Restaurant Review: The Perkin Reveller New london restaurant ...

I?ve just had a bit of a ?When Harry Met Sally? moment with an egg custard tart. It was rather a long time coming, if you?ll pardon the innuendo, with a pleasurably leisurely dinner finally culminating in this timely and ultimate climax. But I?m not at Katz?s Diner- not a bit of it. This restaurant is as staunchly British as that joint is pure Noo York, even taking its name from a character in one of Chaucer?s Canterbury Tales.

According to the story, The Perkin Reveller was a notable bon vivant, and would no doubt have been a regular fixture at his namesake venue. There would have been plenty for him to revel in, that?s for sure- from the best ground-level London views, to the wooden board games stashed in steamer trunks on the sizeable deck, to the well-thought out and even better-executed food and drink menus. There?d have been a seat with his name on it- in fact; all the chairs bear the reveller?s stamp on both their backs and each of the rubber feet.

It?s this kind of attention to detail that makes you sit up and afford The Perkin Reveller the attention it deserves. At first glance, you?re dealing with a thoroughly Modern British outfit- but there?s a glorious clash of the contemporary and the anachronistic which pervades the whole experience from dinner to decor. And, of course, drinks. Bar staff are fantastically enthused and informed, augmenting Brillat-Savarin?s philosophy to fit each Bacchanalian barfly?s tastes, shoving a few sweetly spiced nuts and shatteringly crisp parsnip chips your way while they?re at it.

I like to reckon I?m dry, a little fruity and pleasantly aromatic. Thus I?m presented with the ?Dinner Jacket?- a wonderfully Sahara-like aperitif that renders those salty veg crisps all the more apt. For the thirsty and exotic companion, it?s a longer beverage- a sorbet-topped ?Canterbury Cooler? from the totally tropical Tiki section. Prohibition specials nestle alongside Classics and historical oddities like the ?Seasonal Shrub? (add chutney to taste)- on an encyclopaedic cocktail list, with syrups, infused spirits and foams all made in-house.

Walking- thankfully, not quite weaving- through to our table, that strange new-old collision hits again. It?s a boxy, plate-glassed building, but the 20-foot walnut banqueting table and hanging wall pennants evoke a medieval dining hall. Flickering candlelight from a cacophony of mismatched candelabras adds to the slightly eerie ambience created by the floodlit Tower just outside. Would we like bread? The companion?s glare says it?ll be off with my head if I dare decline.

And he?s on the money. Paul Rhodes bakes a lovely loaf, served with lush, slightly cheesy butter from the South Downs. A starter of Heritage beets and beautiful goats? curd is plated like a trio of ravioli and benefits from a smattering of crushed walnuts, whilst the eel cake with bacon disappears down an eel-loathing, bacon-renouncing gullet at alarming speed. Mains are far easier to eat than to choose- a lamb trio with artichoke and tomato features a noisette, a braised shoulder croquette, and rosy loin slices; with a bounteous Cornish fish stew it?s simpler to list what didn?t lurk in its saffron-scented depths.

Wines are interesting, supped from lovely stubby-stemmed glasses. My white Biodynamic number claims Alsace as its home but boasts a Japanese name- apparently created for the winemaker?s Japanese wife to sip with sushi. And, accordingly, it?s a pretty good match for this ocean catch. With pud, though, it?s back to the cocktails- the 'Crown Jewels' featuring calvados and apple foam and the 'London Noggin' a less sickly take on eggnog. A Bakewell tart inches deep slips down a treat with toasted almond ice cream, but nothing- nothing!- could trump the indecently silky perfection of that egg custard tart.

Good job I?m the one that ordered it, then. No-one else is getting a look in- although that same no-one finds solace in a nice cuppa from the Rare Tea Company. Three hours have passed- not that anyone?s noticed. We?re all too busy marvelling at the strange novelty of a restaurant which delivers consistently on food, drink, decor, ambience and service- a quintet which can only too often prove to be a Curate?s egg. You?re invited to revel, and revel you must- anything less wouldn?t do The Perkin justice.

US Airline Pilots Get iPads But Flight Attendants Get Galaxy Notes

American Airlines has been making the move to digital by giving their pilots iPads instead of paper heavy manuals and the upgrading doesn?t stop there. American Airlines wants their flight attendants outfitted with tech, but they won?t be handing out more full-size tablets. They?re going with the Galaxy Note.

The Note was chosen after a pilot program (heh) in which attendants stated a preference for the Samsung phablet because it has a fairly large display, but can still be held in one hand, and unlike a tablet, it can be slipped into a pocket. Like the pilots, the flight attendants will also have some manuals replaced by the device. It?s also worth mentioning that, while technically a phone, as far as American Airlines is concerned, the Notes are just very small tablets, and they make no mention of the whole mobile phone thing, only the Wi-Fi capabilities.

The airline is set to deploy 17,000 of the devices through mid-2013 and reach 91 per cent ?Wi-Fi readiness? by the end of the year. [American Airlines via Computer World]

Romney gives Dem support for tax deductions claim

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney has given Democrats plenty of support for their claim he manipulated his deductions to keep his overall 2011 federal income tax rate above a certain threshold for political purposes.

The Republican presidential nominee, whose wealth is estimated as high as $250 million, seems hemmed in by a comment to reporters in August that he had never paid less than 13 percent in taxes in any single year over the past 10. Had he taken the full charitable deduction last year, it would have pushed his tax liability below 13 percent.

The former Massachusetts governor and his wife, Ann, could have claimed more in deductions, the trustee of Romney's blind trust said when the candidate's 2011 tax returns were released.

But, Brad Malt acknowledged, the couple "limited their deductions of charitable contributions to conform to the governor's statement in August, based on the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13 percent in income taxes in each of the last 10 years."

The tax returns had become a distraction for his campaign, with Democrats and even some fellow Republicans this summer urging Romney, who earlier had released 2010 data and a preliminary 2011 return, to disclose more than two years of information. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had kept the issue alive by making an unsubstantiated and roundly criticized claim that Romney had not paid any taxes for 10 years. Romney's statement about the 13 percent level had come in reaction to Reid's assertion.

Romney probably also will be reminded by the Democrats by something else he said in August. Defending his right to pay no more taxes than he owed, he said, "I don't pay more than are legally due, and frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I don't think I'd be qualified to become president."

The decision of Romney's trustee to limit the use of charitable deductions in 2011 in order to adhere to the candidate's claim raised the eyebrows of several tax law experts. They noted that the trustee's use of numerous tax strategies gives Romney the rare ability to loosen or limit his tax payments at will.

The Romneys donated roughly $4 million to charities last year, but only claimed a deduction of $2.25 million on their tax return, filed with the Internal Revenue Service on Friday.

That information, Reid said, "reveals that Mitt Romney manipulated one of the only two years of tax returns he's seen fit to show the American people - and then only to 'conform' with his public statements. That raises the question: What else in those returns has Romney manipulated?"

Romney made $13.7 million last year and paid $1.94 million in federal income taxes, giving him an effective tax rate of 14.1 percent. That was a bit above the 13.9 percent rate paid on 2010 income.

More precisely, the returns showed that the couple paid $1,935,708 in taxes on income of $13,696,951.

Romney, one of the wealthiest candidates ever to seek the presidency, paid taxes at a rate lower than taxpayers whose income was mostly from wages, which can be taxed at higher rates.

He released his 2010 returns in January, but he continues to decline to disclose returns from previous years ? including those while he worked at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he co-founded.

The Obama campaign and other Democrats have pushed for fuller disclosures, reminding the Republican candidate that his father, George Romney, released a dozen years of returns when he ran for president.

Overall, the Romneys' main tax return and separate forms for blind trusts totaled more than 800 pages. The blind-trust income came from hedge funds and other complex investment vehicles. The couple also reported $3.5 million in income "from sources outside the United States," citing "various countries." Their forms included filings on holdings in Switzerland, Ireland, Germany and the Cayman Islands.

The Obama campaign accused Romney anew of profiting from millions invested overseas and "loopholes and tax shelters only available to those at the top."

Apparently hoping to resolve basic questions voters might have, the Romney campaign released a letter from his accountants saying that in the 20 years prior to 2010 the Romneys paid an average annual effective rate of 20.2 percent, never lower than 13.66 percent.

On average, middle-income families ? those making from $50,000 to $75,000 a year ? pay 12.8 percent of their income in federal taxes, according to Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation. But many pay a higher rate.

Romney is aggressively competing with Obama for the support of middle-class voters.

Obama's tax return for last year showed that he and his wife, Michelle, paid $162,074 in federal taxes on $789,674 in adjusted gross income, an effective tax rate of 20.5 percent. Their income plunged from $1.7 million in 2010, with declining sales of the president's books. In 2009, the Obamas reported income of $5.5 million, fueled by the best-selling books.

The Romneys' tax bill could have been lower. They gave $2.6 million in cash to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the documents show. They gave just over $2 million in noncash charitable contributions, including donations of stock holdings in Domino's Pizza, Dunkin Donuts and Warner Chilcott, to a family trust.

"It's interesting he didn't take the full charitable deduction," said Victor Fleischer, a University of Colorado law professor who has testified before Congress urging tightened oversight of private equity firms. "You're in a pretty lucky position when you can pay more tax" to get up to a 13 percent rate. Fleischer and several others said it was doubtful Romney could later take any unclaimed deductions in future years.

The Romneys had obtained a filing extension beyond the usual April 15 tax deadline.

Most of their income is from investments held in a blind trust, and campaign aides have stressed that he makes no decisions on how his money is invested. Capital gains and dividend interest is now generally taxed at 15 percent whereas the top marginal rate for income from wages is 35 percent.

The Romneys reported $6.8 million in capital gains, such as from the sale of stocks and other securities, and $6.37 million from dividends and taxable interest.

Several tax law experts said the newly released tax returns would not be much help in resolving critics' questions about his finances: whether he used aggressive tax-deferral strategies, what might be the specifics and tax advantages of his numerous offshore investments, what was the source of his massive retirement account and what are the details behind his now-closed $3 million Swiss bank account.

Analysts said details about his investments could emerge only if Romney provided far more of his tax returns, including files dating back to his years at Bain, the private firm he left in 2001. Romney, who initially refused to disclose any tax returns, has drawn the line at providing those from the past two years.

The Republican vice presidential nominee, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, and his wife, Janna, whose returns were also released Friday by the Romney campaign, paid $64,764 in taxes on $323,416 of adjusted gross income in 2011, for an effective rate of 20 percent.

Just over half of their income came from Ryan's congressional salary. Other income flowed from rental real estate and other investments, including a trust inherited by Janna Ryan. They donated $12,991 to charity, including to the Boy Scouts of America

Too Legit To Quit: 124.2m Legal BitTorrent Music Downloads in 2012

Earlier this week, file-sharing related news was dominated by a set of stats compiled by Musicmetric. The company said that in the first six months of 2012 it monitored 405 million music releases downloaded using BitTorrent. But while huge piracy levels are regularly touted by recording labels, completely legal BitTorrent downloads are growing at an impressive rate. In the first half of the year at least 124 million licensed and legal downloads were enabled by BitTorrent Inc.

On Monday, Musicmetric ? a data and analytics company that maps the trends and preferences of music fans around the world ? published its first Digital Music Index.

Musicmetric revealed that their BitTorrent monitoring, which spanned the first of half of 2012, covered a total 750,000 recording artists. During that six month period they logged a total of 405 million music release downloads.

Now, as regular readers will note, every week and in annual roundups TorrentFreak produces two charts (three if we include our games chart), one for the world?s most downloaded movies and the other for TV shows. They rarely, if ever, contain authorized material.

But interestingly, Musicmetric?s analysis shows that in music things are quite different. Not only did legal music make an appearance, but in 5 of the top 20 downloading countries worldwide, dubstep artist Bill Van topped the charts after signing a licensing deal with BitTorrent Inc., the company behind uTorrent.

?[Legal content] has become hugely popular in place of other illegal content in a quarter of the top 20 countries for downloads,? Musicmetric explained.

And today, BitTorrent Inc. points TorrentFreak towards what the company describes as a ?fun infographic?, but one with a very serious point. While Musicmetric might have logged 405 million downloads in total, BitTorrent Inc. can claim credit for a significant proportion of them through its licensing work.

During the first half of 2012 BitTorrent Inc?s artist promotions delivered 124,191,863 licensed, legal music downloads. A massive number, which shows that BitTorrent is much more than a tool for pirates.

?What this statistic shows very clearly is there?s a lot of good, legitimate content in the BitTorrent ecosystem that is adding value to the careers of the artists and publishers who decided to release their work using the protocol,? BitTorrent Inc?s Matt Mason told TorrentFreak.

?These are just the BitTorrent Bundles we as a company were seeding ourselves, which are the only things we can track. The total number of times these files were shared worldwide is probably much higher. Whatever that number is, one thing is certain; to say BitTorrent is just for illegal file-sharing is flat-out wrong.?

According to Mason the artist promotions BitTorrent ran have been a great success, and not just because of the impressive download statistic. Artists are eager to work with BitTorrent and see value in sharing their work for free. In the coming months and years BitTorrent Inc. therefore plans to continue and improve their collaboration with artists.

?BitTorrent is quite simply the best way to move large files across the Internet. More and more, the creative industries are coming to understand BitTorrent, and are using it to get their work directly to their fans in ways that makes sense for everyone,? Mason told TorrentFreak.

The 124 million plus downloads is a huge figure and difficult to visualize, so BitTorrent Inc. has chosen to show what 689,955 looks like, the number of licensed music downloads the company facilitates in a single day using uTorrent.

Have fun scrolling, then multiply the time it took by 180 to get an idea of 6 months worth of downloads.

UK soldier unexpectedly gives birth in Afghanistan

(AP) ? A British soldier has given birth to a son while serving in Afghanistan at the same camp where Prince Harry is deployed and a Taliban attack last week killed two U.S. Marines.

The birth in a combat zone field hospital is thought to be the first ever case of its type for Britain's military.

The Fijian national, a gunner with the Royal Artillery, delivered the child Tuesday at Camp Bastion, the major British base in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, which last week suffered a major attack in which two U.S. marines were killed and six American fighter jets destroyed.

Britain's defense ministry said Thursday that it had not been aware the soldier was pregnant, and stressed that it does not allow female soldiers to deploy on operation if they are pregnant. It declined to say whether the soldier, who has not been named, was aware of her pregnancy.

"Mother and baby are both in a stable condition in the hospital and are receiving the best possible care," the ministry said in a statement. It said a team of doctors would fly out to Afghanistan in the coming days to help the solider and her son return safely to Britain.

The woman had deployed to Afghanistan in March, meaning her child was conceived before her tour of duty began.

Camp Bastion, which hosts the U.S. Camp Leatherneck, is home to the most of Britain's 9,500 soldiers in Afghanistan, including Prince Harry ? who arrived there earlier this month to serve as an attack helicopter gunner.

"This sort of thing makes life difficult for everyone else, but the important thing is the welfare of the female soldier. This could have gone wrong and we don't know if the attack on Camp Bastion might have forced the birth," said Maj. Charles Heyman, a retired soldier and author of "'The British Army Guide."

Heyman said it may have been "that the excitement of the tour masked the symptoms of the pregnancy."

Belinda Phipps, chief executive of the National Childbirth Trust, a British parenting charity, also suggested the soldier's demanding duties could explain why she either didn't know she was pregnant or attempted to ignore the signs.

"It could be that she was so very focused on other things, and because she was in a life-or-death scenario, that she simply didn't recognize that she was pregnant," Phipps said.

Phipps said the pregnancy may not have been obvious to the soldier's colleagues. "Not everyone has a very big baby bump, some women carry their baby far inside," she said.

Patrick O'Brien, a consultant obstetrician at University College London Hospital, said cases of unexpected pregnancies were unusual but that he encountered at least one each year.

"There are some women who have very irregular periods, often women who are very fit and exercise a lot. There are women who don't have sickness during pregnancy. Some women ? particularly those who are overweight ? don't recognize they have put on weight, or feel the baby moving," O'Brien said.

Many cases involved women who refuse to accept that they were pregnant and attempted to disguise it, particularly young women living at home.

"It's not just that they hide the pregnancy from their parents, they often become in denial of the pregnancy," he said.

"If you have a combination of any or all of those things, a pregnancy can go undetected, or the woman can be in denial of it if the implications to their life are so great," said O'Brien, a spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist.

A 2002 survey of Berlin hospitals between 1995 and 1996 found that about 1 in 475 pregnancies were either undetected or denied. About 40 percent of the women had seen a doctor while they were pregnant, who also failed to detect the signs.

Production Begins on Disney's Saving Mr. Banks

Disney begins production on Saving Mr. Banks

The documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker?s Apocalypse demonstrates how the story behind the making of Francis Ford Coppola?s Apocalypse Now is as much a tale steeped in madness and depravity as the final film was. A title like?Shadow of the Vampire, by comparison, took the real story behind F.W. Muranu?s Nosferatu and transformed it into a vampire flick that satirizes the moviemaking process.

Now, Disney is setting to work on Saving Mr. Banks, a film about the hurdles that Walt Disney jumped through to make a bright and bubbly musical adaptation of Mary Poppins, which would go on to find box office success and Academy Awards-glory. However, Saving Mr. Banks may prove to be more about author?P.L. Travers than Walt, if the official plot summary is a proper indicator.

Saving Mr. Banks has begun principal photography in the Los Angeles area, with ?key locations? around Disneyland in Anaheim and Disney Studio in Burbank due to make an appearance in the film. Tom Hanks will become the first person to portray old Walt on the big screen in a dramatic feature (according to the press release, that is), while fellow dual-Oscar winner Emma Thompson is tackling the role of the very regal Ms. Travers. The pair are working from a script penned by Terra Nova creator?Kelly Marcel, summarized as follows:

When Travers travels from London to Hollywood in 1961 to finally discuss Disney?s desire to bring her beloved character to the motion picture screen (a quest he began in the 1940s as a promise to his two daughters), Disney meets a prim, uncompromising sexagenarian not only suspect of the impresario?s concept for the film, but a woman struggling with her own past. During her stay in California, Travers? reflects back on her childhood in 1906 Australia, a trying time for her family which not only molded her aspirations to write, but one that also inspired the characters in her 1934 book.

None more so than the one person whom she loved and admired more than any other?her caring father, Travers Goff, a tormented banker who, before his untimely death that same year, instills the youngster with both affection and enlightenment (and would be the muse for the story?s patriarch, Mr. Banks, the sole character that the famous nanny comes to aide). While reluctant to grant Disney the film rights, Travers comes to realize that the acclaimed Hollywood storyteller has his own motives for wanting to make the film?which, like the author, hints at the relationship he shared with his own father in the early 20th Century Midwest.

Directing duties belong to John Lee Hancock, whose credits include Disney?s The Rookie and The Alamo as well as (more famously) The Blind Side. That resume suggests Saving Mr. Banks could fall more on the warm and fuzzy (re: sappy) side with a bittersweet, yet ultimately satisfying, conclusion ? when, in reality, Travers never licensed any of her work to Walt again, being so thoroughly disappointed with how he transformed?Mary Poppins (a work of personal significance) into crowd-pleasing entertainment.

Three More Join Disney's Saving Mr. Banks starring Tom Hanks

On the other hand, that doesn?t mean Saving Mr. Banks won?t make for pleasant viewing ? even if it does depart from the hard facts for dramatic purposes ? just not enough so that the story rings hollow, hopefully. Besides, Hanks and Thompson are terrific fits for their roles as Disney and Travers; not to mention, the film could still offer an insightful look at how a storyteller?s real-life informed her writing, as much as Johnny Depp?s Oscar-nominated Finding Neverland (which, for the record, does play somewhat fast and loose with the facts).

The cast of Saving Mr. Banks is rounded out by?Colin Farrell as the troubled Travers Goff, along with Luther alum Ruth Wilson (who is also the female lead in Disney?s Lone Ranger) as his ?long-suffering? wife, Margaret. Other supporting players include Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti (The Ides of March), B.J. Novak (The Office), Jason Schwartzman (Moonrise Kingdom), Bradley Whitford (The Cabin in the Woods), and Rachel Griffiths (Brothers & Sisters).

Look for Saving Mr. Banks to arrive in theaters by late 2013, just as Oscar fever starts spreading.

PayPal Blocks Argentine Peso-to-Dollar Conversions

Online payment service PayPal will prevent users in Argentina from making domestic transfers. PayPal users in Argentina will only be able to send and receive "international payments" starting on Oct. 9. The move is apparently linked to the Argentine government's 2011 decision to restrict the purchase of U.S. dollars, a move implemented either to prevent tax evasion and money laundering, or to prop up the value of the peso, depending on whom you ask.
