College Sophomore D?Agostino is a 5K Runner on the Rise

Imagine for a moment that you?re sprinting the last 50 meters of the 5,000 meter run, and you know you?re seconds away from catching the runner in front of you?taking you from fourth place to third, which will earn you a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Now imagine that a runner you had passed only meters ago suddenly sprints past you and the runner in front of you?making you the fifth place finisher in the Women?s 5,000 meter Final at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field. This was the experience of Abbey D?Agostino on Thursday night.

Running unattached, D?Agostino is a sophomore at Dartmouth College, and by all accounts a 5K runner on the rise. In her 2010-2011 freshman year, she missed the Cross Country season due to injury, and came back to have one of the best freshman seasons in the history of Dartmouth Track & Field. She finished third in the 5K at the NCAA Championships and set the Big Green and Ivy record of 15:40.69. This performance earned her a spot on the USTFCCCA All-America team. ?I?ve had such a great year, it?s not fair to be upset,? D?Agostino said of her disappointment at not making the U.S. Olympic Team.

Though her disappointment was clear from the tears in her eyes and the cracks in her voice, D?Agostino is happy for the three women who will go on to compete in London: ?I?m glad these three women will be representing the U.S. It?ll be really fun to see them race in London.?

With a time of 15:19.98, D?Agostino?s fifth place finish was only .15 seconds behind Julia Lucas? fourth place finish of 15:19.83, and .19 seconds behind Conley?s outta-nowhere 15:19.79 third place finish.

Upon entering the final round of the 5K, D?Agostino had the fastest time out of the 16 finalists. Though the athletes were running to qualify for the finals and not necessarily to turn in record performances, D?Agostino?s ranking makes her athletic intentions clear: she came her to compete. ?I?m still young and I?ve learned so much about the sport from my experiences here. I believe every experience translates into improvement. I plan to be here in 2016.?

Playoff dollars could spark calls to pay players

NEW YORK (AP) ? The new playoff system means big money for major college football, as much as a half-billion dollars per year just in television rights alone.

That has Texas coach Mack Brown ? among others ? wondering if some of that windfall should be heading the players way.

"In my opinion, with the amount of money the playoff will generate, I hope we can revisit the student-athlete stipend," Brown tweeted soon after the new, semifinal format was approved by university presidents Tuesday in Washington.

"It will be a very lucrative event and those young people are the ones that make it all possible," he added.

Even before the plan had a presidential seal of approval, a group of former and current athletes was pushing for some of the newfound wealth to be spent on player safety and health ? an issue that becomes more important as the season expands.

The current Bowl Championship Series television deal with ESPN, plus the Rose Bowl's separate agreement with ABC, pay the major college football schools about $155 million per year. That money is distributed unevenly throughout college football, with power conferences such as the Big Ten and Big 12 getting more for their members than others such as the Mountain West and Conference USA.

The commissioners working on the playoff system have been reluctant to speculate on exactly how much the TV rights for it will be worth, but they all agree it'll be at least double.

Also, the new national title game will go to the highest-bidding city, which will pour millions more into the coffers of FBS schools. Officials in Arlington, Texas, home of the Cotton Bowl, and Atlanta, where the Chick-fil-A Bowl is played, are already lining up to make a pitch.

West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck said that, to those who want the players to receive more money, all that playoff cash "is at least one more arrow in their quiver."

While NCAA President Mark Emmert has argued strongly against paying football players like professionals, in a manner that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has been pushing the past two years, the fight over raising student compensation already has started.

Last year, new legislation was approved that would have allowed schools to offer a $2,000 stipend, in addition to their scholarship, toward what the NCAA calls the full cost-of-attendance.

But the measure was tossed into limbo after more than 100 schools asked for an override vote. Critics were concerned about whether all schools would be able to afford it, especially with so many facing budget crunches in the economic downturn. Also, there is concern that the schools which can afford to pay the extra stipend will gain an advantage in recruiting.

Still, Emmert has said he would still like it passed, and he praised the approval of a new postseason format to replace the BCS.

"I commend the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee on its leadership to move to a playoff model," he said. "I remain confident that as the details of the new format are determined in the coming weeks, presidents will continue to keep student-athlete well-being, both in the classroom and on the field, front of mind."

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said it's too soon to start talking about what do with the extra money.

"I think there's still a lot of work to be vetting out, and how the revenue is going to be distributed is the first step in that," he said. "We haven't gotten that far along in the process but I expect over the course of the next academic year we will do that in meetings."

Luck said he had been telling his bosses, even before the new playoff format, that they should start budgeting for the increased cost of scholarships.

"I always kind of figured it was inevitable," he said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

Cutting back would seem to be off the board at this point, Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said. With teams being asked to play as many as 15 games in a season now, he said there better not be any more talk about reducing the 85-scholarship limit.

"Any talk about that going forward has to cease," he said. "You're going to need more players to get through a season healthy."

Washington State coach Mike Leach said while he has no problem with giving players a bigger scholarship, maybe the extra money could go toward more scholarships.

"Give everybody five more scholarships, five more opportunities for guys to go to school," he said.

The National College Players Association, an advocacy group made up of 17,000 current and former Division I student-athletes, isn't looking for players to be paid as much as it would like more money spent to keep them safe.

Their point is the national title winner is going to start camp in August 2014 and finish the season on Jan. 12, 2015, with a regular season, conference title game, semifinal and final in between. Not so long ago, NFL teams had only a 14-game regular season.

The group's president, former UCLA football player Ramogi Huma, was in Washington and arrived at the hotel where the presidents and commissioners a few minutes before the meeting started.

"Our universities shouldn't add extra games without adding extra protections to minimize the head trauma risks associated with contact sports," Huma said.

Pakistan militants' war with CIA may raise children's polio risk

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan? The war between the CIA and Pakistani militant groups threatens to produce an unlikely casualty: thousands of children who are being denied polio vaccinations in one of the few places on Earth where the disease is still a menace.

A phony inoculation program orchestrated by the CIA last year to help it track down Osama bin Laden bolstered long-standing claims by hard-line clerics that vaccination campaigns are a Western plot against Pakistanis.

The complaints turned serious this month when the Pakistani Taliban said it would not allow a planned polio vaccination campaign to proceed in the North Waziristan tribal region along the Afghan border. The Taliban said the move was in retaliation for the parade of U.S. drone attacks on militant strongholds, and because it believes such campaigns are used as a cover for Western espionage.

On Monday, a top Taliban leader in neighboring South Waziristan announced a ban on polio vaccinations there. Maulvi Nazir, the Taliban commander, also cited the drone program and the use of a vaccination program to hunt for Bin Laden as justification for barring medical teams from inoculating children.

The ban in North Waziristan has forced U.N. and Pakistani vaccination teams to halt efforts to reach about 160,000 children in that expanse of rugged badlands, which serves as sanctuary for an array of Islamic militant groups. They include Al Qaeda; factions of the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban; and the Haqqani network, the Afghan militant group responsible for some of the deadliest attacks in Kabul and eastern Afghanistan in recent years.

The initial decree was issued by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a North Waziristan Taliban leader, after a council of militant groups was reported to have endorsed the plan.

"There will be a ban on polio vaccinations until the drone attacks are stopped," Bahadur said in pamphlets distributed throughout North Waziristan. "Almost every person in Waziristan is becoming mentally sick because of day-and-night flights of drones. This is more dangerous than polio."

The pamphlet also refers to Shakeel Afridi, the Pakistani doctor who led a phony vaccination campaign against hepatitis B to help pinpoint the whereabouts of Bin Laden in the city of Abbottabad, where a team of Navy SEALs killed him in May 2011. Afridi is viewed as a hero by many Americans, but in Pakistan he has been vilified as a traitor and sentenced to 33 years in prison.

"There is the chance that these anti-polio campaigns will be used by the U.S. to spy against the mujahedin fighters," Bahadur said in the pamphlets. "One example of this is Dr. Shakeel Afridi."

Like the Haqqani network, Bahadur's fighters direct their attacks at U.S. and Afghan security forces on the other side of the border. Bahadur continues to abide by an accord with Pakistan that keeps his fighters from attacking Pakistani military and civilian targets, in return giving him free rein over sections of North Waziristan.

Polio cases are on the rise in hard-to-reach villages and towns in conflict zones near the border with Afghanistan. Pakistani officials say the halt to vaccinations in the Waziristan tribal regions is worrisome because people from the regions routinely travel ? and may spread the disease ? to other cities and towns in northwestern Pakistan, to Afghanistan and to Pakistan's largest city, Karachi.

Polio, which is caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system, is highly communicable and can result in irreversible paralysis within hours of infection. Found more often in countries that lack proper sanitation and hygiene, it mostly affects children younger than 5. The virus typically enters the body through the mouth and then is spread through fecal contamination of food or beverages.

"It's the first time that such a ban has been imposed on" North Waziristan, said Muhammad Sadiq, the chief doctor for the region. "It's very serious. Such a ban puts the entire region at risk."

Pakistan is one of just three countries where polio is deemed endemic; the other two are Afghanistan and Nigeria. As of June 23, 22 cases of polio had been recorded in Pakistan this year. Last year, the country logged 198 cases, according to the World Health Organization. Officials say the lower figure so far this year is because local authorities are doing a better job of preventing the disease in vulnerable neighborhoods.

Pakistani officials say there are nearly 320,000 children under 5 in North and South Waziristan who need regular polio vaccinations. Most of those children were vaccinated during the last visit by anti-polio teams, but children who are at risk are not considered fully immunized until they have received repeated dosages.

The U.S. has no plans to end its drone campaign, which it says has been highly effective in undermining the capabilities of Al Qaeda and its allied militant groups. Given how entrenched the Taliban is in North Warizistan, Pakistani officials see negotiations with Bahadur as their only option to get him to rescind the ban. In a letter sent to a regional governor, the federal government urged local and provincial officials to begin talks with Bahadur.

"Setbacks like this will limit our efforts to reach every child in Pakistan," wrote Shahnaz Wazir Ali, who heads the federal government's polio eradication efforts. "Using the polio campaign as a negotiating tactic is very unfortunate, as it is the families and the children in North Waziristan who will suffer."

Innovative CDC Effort Expands HIV Testing into Pharmacies

Atlanta, GA--(ENEWSPF)--June 26, 2012. ?A pilot project to train pharmacists and retail store clinic staff at 24 rural and urban sites to deliver confidential rapid HIV testing was announced today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The goal of the initiative is to extend HIV testing and counseling into the standard everyday services offered by pharmacies and retail clinics.

CDC will use the results of the pilot effort to develop a model for implementation of HIV testing in these settings across the United States. The project is part of CDC?s efforts to support its 2006 testing recommendations, which call for all adults and adolescents to be tested for HIV at least once in their lives.

?We know that getting people tested, diagnosed and linked to care are critical steps in reducing new HIV infections,? said Kevin Fenton, M.D., director of CDC?s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention. ?By bringing HIV testing into pharmacies, we believe we can reach more people by making testing more accessible and also reduce the stigma associated with HIV.

CDC estimates that 1.1 million people are living with HIV in the United States, yet nearly 1 in 5 remains unaware of the infection. In addition, one-third of those with HIV are diagnosed so late in the course of their infection that they develop AIDS within one year, missing years of opportunities to receive life-extending medical care and treatment, and potentially reduce transmission to partners.

Community pharmacies and retail clinics, with their convenience and easy accessibility, could play a critical role in ensuring more Americans have access to an HIV test. Data suggest that more that millions Americans enter pharmacies every week, and an estimated 30 percent of the U.S. population lives within a 10-minute drive of a retail clinic. Compared to health care settings and conventional HIV testing sites, these locations may provide an environment that is more accessible to persons who may be anxious about seeking an HIV test.

?Our goal is to make HIV testing as routine as a blood pressure check,? said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., director of CDC?s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. ?This initiative is one example of how we can make testing routine and help identify the hundreds of thousands of Americans who are unaware that they are infected.?

Throughout the two-year initiative, CDC will provide training for staff in community pharmacies and retail clinics in 12 urban areas and 12 rural areas with high HIV prevalence or significant unmet HIV testing needs. Training will focus on how to deliver rapid HIV testing and counseling and link those who are diagnosed with the virus to care and treatment.

Based on lessons learned, CDC will develop a comprehensive toolkit that pharmacists and retail clinic staff from around the country can use to implement HIV testing.

98% The Island President

In the simultaneously inspiring and harrowing documentary "The Island President," Mohamed Nasheed was elected to the presidency of the Maldives, a 2000 island archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, bringing an end to a thirty-year repressive dictatorship in 2008. But a new struggle presents itself in global warming. Currently, the effects there can be seen in erosion and the groundwater. All of which could lead to a unique culture and nation being literally wiped from the map, and its country's population turned into 'environmental refugees.' So, instead of spending valuable resources on health care and education, he has to go with sea walls and other protective measures. So, through this example, we get a disturbing look at what all of our futures may be like if we do not change our ways very soon.(With the use of some great shots, the Maldvies do seem like something out of speculative fiction.) If our behavior affects all others across the globe, then why can't the butterfly flap its wings in the opposite direction, which is where Nasheed comes in, not only in speaking across the world(I'm not recommending invoking World War II usually in speehces, but if you have to, mention Czechoslovakia), but also in proposing to make his country entirely carbon neutral in 10 years by relying on renewable energy sources like solar and wind, making the Maldives an example for the rest of the world. This is harder than it sounds with the economic interests of countries like China and India making things especially difficult with a memorable climax at the climate conference at Copenhagen in 2009. But sadly, Nasheed did not have that much time as he was ousted in a threatened coup in February of this year.

Raising Your Business Management Success ? What to Do and ...

If you want to increase your business management success, it?s good to reexamine your goals periodically. Everybody knows that most won?t do this?or they?ll think that they are but they will be consistently failing at it. What is going to feel odd is that the principles of management are going to seem to be the exact opposite of what you want to accomplish with your highest priority goals. But, if you are a business manager, you can choose to be your own person and go against this.

A lot of times the real issue for many managers is not having good policies in place, it?s just that they do not follow them. It takes courage to do the right thing in business day in and day out. Learn about the principles of successful business management and then apply what it is that you have learned. DEFL 2.0

What you will find about people in general is they will gladly accept more responsibility just as long as it is seen to be fair. There will always be those who will only complain about it, but they tend to complain about everything. If you are in this situation, you should be open about what you are hoping to get from your department. Let people know this is not just about you getting a good bonus. There needs to be something in it for them beyond telling them that it will help them keep their jobs. It is important that they feel like they are sharing your goals with you. A common occurrence in a business is when one coworker is promoted to a management position. However, that person will be placed under some serious stress. If this does happen, the rules of management need to be followed strictly. However, it is only reasonable to expect a person to remain friends with the people worked with before the promotion. Making it obvious there is a barrier between them now is the worst approach for any manager. You want to avoid alienating your friends and isolating yourself because everyone already knows the dynamic is different. DeWalt DWS535 review

Regardless of the department that you are in, there is usually not that much creativity in it. Creativity is not something that is absolutely essential for your department to run. When looking for ways to cut costs, or be efficient, this is still something that you should look into. Imagine you are looking at the need to cut staff unless you can come up with solutions for some problem. Instead of doing this, you might want to get people together and figure out what to do. You will be surprised at what people will think of when their backs are up against the way. If there is no pending crisis, you can also achieve the same results. A business should be careful when they have decided to try a more professional business management style. You have to avoid making things so confusing that productivity will suffer. Any system will experience a problem when things change and that includes your business. Adaptation of the people and processes can take a while as a result. FlightProSim review

Britain Bans Nike's Twitter Campaign for Euro 2012

English footballers breaking rules? Blimey! The U.K. advertising watchdog?must be a Scot, it's so nippy and feisty!?has banned a Nike Twitter campaign after ruling that tweets sent from the personal accounts of soccer stars Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere were not clearly labeled as advertising. Nike begged to differ, noting that the #MakeItCount hashtag and a corporate URL appeared in the tweets. The watchdog wasn't inclined to throw the company a bone: "We considered there was nothing obvious in the tweets to indicate they were Nike marketing communications." This marks the first time the Advertising Standards Authority had banned a Twitter campaign. From Nike's point of view, the dogfight's already yielded enough global publicity to ensure that the effort exceeds its #gooooooooaaaaal!

Video: Decision makers: Courting the Latino vote

>> of course, latinos are one of the key constituencies that could ultimately decide who wins the white house . tonight we begin a series of reports in the most fiercely contested battleground states zeroing in on the decision makers. and the issues that matter to them most. tonight david gregory takes us to virginia and some undecided latino voters. both sides are fighting so hard to win over.

>> hey, what you doing?

>> reporter: mary servent of leesburg, virginia from venezuela originally became an american citizen three and a half years ago. she is still working on her english as she raises two boys and runs a small marketing firm. in this presidential race her vote counts a lot.

>> this is hard.

>> reporter: what is most important to you when you're trying to decide who you're going to vote for?

>> the economy is more important.

>> reporter: she says she has confidence in mitt romney 's business skills, but agrees with some of the attacks against him.

>> he is going to go for the rich people in this country. i don't feel he speaks to me.

>> reporter: president obama , she complains, promised too much. especially on immigration.

>> i love hispanic people . remember this situation.

>> reporter: he is with the president. he argues things are better now and mr. obama needs more time to fix the economy.

>> it's not been as fast as we all wish but at least we are not continuing to lose jobs.

>> reporter: how important are families like this? consider this. four years ago here in virginia hispanics made up 4% of presidential voters and the community has only grown, so an additional 1% or 2% could decide whether or not president obama keeps this all important swing state in his column. nationally the president has a huge 2 - 1 advantage over mr. romney among latino voters. but romney's strategy may not be to win among latinos . he is simply trying to cut into the lead.

>> is the america of 11% hispanic unemployment the america of our dreams? we can do better.

>> reporter: telemundo's reporter says both candidates need to convince latinos they know what is important to them.

>> for latino voters the economy, unemployment, the home crisis, the foreclosure crisis, all these issues that affect all of us in the country, have been disproportionately affecting latinos .

>> reporter: high stakes . for mary servent it will be her very first time vote forgue presideforgue -- voting for president. you are the decider in the fall.

>> it's important. it's power for us.

>> reporter: power but for now a tough choice. david gregory , nbc news, leesburg, virginia .

>> david's guest on "meet the press" this sunday will be florida senator marco rubio . he has written a new book on his immigrant roots and will talk to david about that sunday on "meet the press."

An intricately graffitied piano, propped casually on the lawn outside of the Blunt Alumni Center, has attracted many curious glances and prompted spontaneous music since its installation earlier this month. Monte Reed ?12 had just said his final farewell to Dartmouth when he spotted the piano and jumped out of his car to examine it more closely.Reed, who sang in the Dartmouth Cords a capella group and won Dartmouth Idol this year, couldn?t resist sitting down at the incongruous, randomly placed instrument and playing one last song. He belted out one of Adele?s hits while he played. People passing on the sidewalk paused to listen before continuing on their way.?The piano was popping, eye-catching,? Reed said. ?You wouldn?t expect to see this here.?The piano is one of 50 donated by local residents that have been placed across campus and throughout the Upper Valley as part of Hands on Pianos, a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hopkins Center, according to Hop programming director Margaret Lawrence.?Pianos are expensive to get rid of when they?re past their prime,? Lawrence said. ?I said, ?I bet if we asked and if we covered cost of getting them and transformed them into something wonderful, we?d have a lot of takers.??Pianos had to be upright and in working order and were then painted by artists, who ranged from students to college employees to local grade-school classes. Each is decorated with the message, ?This piano is for you, whatever skill level! Go ahead! Play!?Street piano projects have become popular in recent years, and with 50 instruments, Hands on Pianos is the largest project outside of New York City, according to Lawrence.?It?s mainly in larger cities, but smaller communities have started to embrace it as a fun way to engage the whole community,? she said.Thayer School of Engineering exchange student Alex Ziebell stopped at the piano simply out of curiosity.?I saw it from far away and thought, ?Is that a piano? It can?t be, it?s outside,?? he said.Ziebell had attempted to learn piano on his iPad and was drawn by the chance to sit down and try the actual instrument, though he admitted that playing on the real thing is different. The sign on each piano also indicates the program website, where viewers can upload pictures of themselves playing the piano. These are added to photo collections of the artists? work on the instruments, the owners? histories of the pianos and maps of the piano locations.?Students and community members can add their own pictures,? Lawrence said. ?It?s very profound and beautiful. It?s really great to see the human side of this.?The pianos are still being installed, but the few that are out are already used frequently.Hanover resident Justin Evans paused to play one of the pianos as he passed it after work.?I think this is really cool,? Evans said. ?I have a guitar at home that I hardly ever play when I leave it in its case. But when I?ve tried leaving it sitting out, I find that I play it a lot more.?Pianos will soon arrive on the Green and at the swimming docks, Lawrence said. Hands on Pianos will also feature weekly special events, including sing-alongs and tuning lessons.?I don?t play piano, but it stimulated my interest,? Alex Choi ?13 said.Molly Hassell ?13 said that the pianos are perfect for Summer term.?It?s in the spirit of sophomore summer to be colorful and lively,? she said.Reed said he has heard his peers say that arts should be revived at the College, and the program is a big step in that direction. The pianos will stay in their locations until the end of July. Artists will have first priority to claim the pianos they painted, and those leftover will be given to the Lebanon Transfer Station for Piano Adoption Day, according to Lawrence.?We just hope students find them and use all of them,? she said. ?It?s a nice way to get art and music out there and involve the entire community.?

News and Society Blog-Economics: In Europe, Its 2008 All Over ...

Investors clamored last week to lend money to the German government for two years at no interest. Some investors accepted negative yields - meaning they gave Berlin a cut of their assets merely in exchange for their safekeeping.

If not yet indicative of an out-and-out panic, it is at least a sign of economic hopelessness. Skepticism regarding most other European governments and European banks has reached levels that are driving investors to seek refuge rather than opportunity. Their money is flowing out of banks, out of bonds issued by less financially stable governments, and out of corporate stocks, all for fear that tighter credit and government austerity will trigger a profit-crushing recession.

As European leaders bicker over how to respond, the bickering itself is adding to the problem by feeding concern that the situation will be allowed to get much worse before policymakers finally take forceful enough steps to allow healing to begin.

Today's Euro-centric problems are reminiscent of those that prompted our own appearance at center stage of 2008's global financial mess.

The worst moment in the crisis that year arguably occurred on September 29, when the House of Representatives shocked its own leadership by rejecting a $700 banking bailout plan. The vote came exactly two weeks after Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy. Suddenly, even though most institutions were actually solvent, nobody trusted anybody. Stock markets plunged, and credit for everything from business expansions to mortgages all but dried up. Money flooded into U.S. Treasury obligations, which were perceived as a safe haven.

This was no mere crisis of confidence. There was a real problem at the root of the financial gridlock - namely the bursting of a U.S. housing bubble that exposed a mountain of unpayable mortgage debt. Someone was going to take a big loss; we just did not know then who the unluckiest parties would be. Trading in securitized mortgages and derivatives amplified the losses and transmitted them around the world.

Yet, as big as the problem was, the financial system itself was much bigger. As a whole, the leading banks here and abroad remained solvent, even though individual institutions risked failure. An isolated failure was a manageable risk in the broad scheme of things, even if it was not a risk that private actors were willing to accept after the Lehman collapse and the subsequent troubles at AIG, Merrill Lynch and a number of other firms.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, and Timothy Geithner, who at the time headed the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and later became Paulson's successor, organized the bailout plan. Their idea was to buy troubled mortgages and other so-called toxic assets from the banks, removing the threat to the institutions' financial strength that such fast-depreciating assets represented.

President George W. Bush signed on, as did congressional leaders in both houses from both parties. But when the plan came before the House, rank-and-file members rebelled. Democrats, who controlled the chamber, voted 140-95 in favor, while Republicans opposed it by a two-to-one margin, at 65-133. The result was a stunning 228-205 defeat.

The markets reacted furiously, even as the vote was going on. Everything sold off except Treasuries, which reached levels not seen since the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, and the bonds of a few of the most secure foreign governments, notably Germany and the United Kingdom.

Despite their leaders' entreaties, lawmakers opposed the bailout plan, partly because they believed it would saddle the government with losses that rightly belonged to the banks and partly because they feared voters would promptly turn them out of office for backing the bankers who the public largely blamed for creating the crisis in the first place.

But within a few days, the House reversed itself and passed the plan 263-171. Fifty-eight lawmakers changed their minds. In the end, everyone recognized what many refused to acknowledge then and have refused to acknowledge since: The bailout was not for the benefit of the bankers. It was for the benefit of the country. A functioning economy is impossible without functioning banks. Functioning banks are impossible without public confidence in their ability to do business. And the banks, for all their missteps, were in the aggregate fundamentally sound. The bailout, which was eventually modified to become the Troubled Asset Relief Program, has been a net moneymaker for the government on its bank operations.

Though there are some similarities, notably in the role that housing bubbles played in bringing on troubles in Spain and Ireland, Europe's issues are still somewhat different from those we confronted four years ago. We worried then that private banks were overexposed to one another; today's growing concern is that Europe's banks are overexposed to the shaky finances of governments in places like Spain, Greece and Portugal. Unless you strengthen the governments, it is very hard to strengthen the banks. If you can't strengthen the banks, you can't strengthen the local economy. If you can't strengthen the economy, you can't strengthen the government.

Yet certain policy responses, like our 2008 bailout, are likely to be forced on even reluctant European politicians. A multinational system of bank regulation and deposit insurance, direct loans and other support from the European Central Bank to individual institutions, multinational oversight of national budget and tax plans, and eventually European multinational bonds are all likely to happen sooner or later.

Passage of the 2008 bailout bill was a key step in stabilizing the American financial crisis and restoring faith in our financial institutions. It happened only after the financial markets sounded a clear warning of the disaster to follow if the banks were left to flounder on their own. Europe is now having its own 2008 moment. Here's hoping the ultimate response is equally constructive.

New Study Reveals Gen X-ers are Hardest Hit by Great Recession

If asked who was hardest hit in the latest recession, how would you respond? You might say Baby Boomers who have worked hard and lost hard over the last five or so years. You might say college graduates who are increasingly moving back home post-graduation because they are hard pressed to find jobs. A study released by the US Census Bureau revealed Generation X (ages 35-44 years old) lost 59% of median net worth, the highest percentage of loss across all age groups.

When I really thought about the report it made sense to me. Gen X is the age group who own homes that aren?t paid off, cars that aren?t paid off and have kids in school including perhaps college. Our lives are financed and when the housing and stock markets took hits, so did our personal net worth.

?Householders age 35 to 44 had the largest percent decline in median net worth from 2005 to 2010 of any age group: 59 percent.? ? US Census Report

?

Based on my personal experience, that makes a lot of sense! My husband lost 50% of his income. I lost a small business and 70% of my income. Collectively my family lost its dream home and is fighting back hard to get another home to call our own. Some of our friends and neighbors have chosen to remain renters. Makes me wonder if renting a home is the new American dream.

My family, like so many we know and read about in the news, has made changes to survive our personal economic downturn. We?re spending more time together doing low cost activities like walking, playing in the park and family bowling night. Understanding what?s important in life has been a key to our growth as a family. We are grateful.

As you and your family rebuild know there are resources available to you via local, county and national government and non-government entities. Faith based organizations like Career Connectors are helping Americans get back to work.

As we move ahead as a family, community and nation we are seeing light at the end of what was once a dark tunnel. Know you are not alone and there are people ready to help you.

Toshiba Excite 10

The Toshiba Excite 10 ($449.99/16GB, $529.99/32GB, $649.99/64GB), much like the rest of the latest Excite line, is an attractively built and powerful?tablet. It's among the thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablets available today, and the latest quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 software make for a potent combo. It makes the earlier Toshiba Excite 10 LE?($529, 3 stars), with its older Tegra 2 processor, look like a pre-production model. Despite the sleek aluminum construction, there's nothing spectacular about the Excite 10, and for $70 less, you could get an equally powerful, feature-rich Asus Transformer Pad TF300?($379.99, 4 stars). It's less expensive than the New Apple iPad?($499.99, 4.5 stars), but that extra $50 gets you a much more impressive high-resolution Retina display and access to a more expansive tablet-centric app market.

Design and Features
The three tablets in the Excite line look nearly identical, from the Excite 7.7?($499.99, 3.5 stars) to the massive Excite 13?($649.99, 3 stars). All share the same streamlined design, with textured aluminum back panels and plastic outer edges. At 10.3 by 7.0 by 0.35 inches (HWD) and 1.32 pounds, the Excite 10 is a hair thinner and lighter than the New iPad (9.5 by 7.31 by 0.37 inches, 1.46 pounds). Along the left edge are Volume and Power buttons, as well as an Orientation Lock switch. On the opposite edge you'll find a 3.5mm headphone jack, micro USB port, micro HDMI port, and a full-sized SD card slot. The latter will be a boon for photographers who use standard-size SD cards, but instead of a flap cover, the tablet ships with a detached plastic cover that must be removed to insert a card?I could see myself easily losing that and being left with a large, unprotected slot on the side of my tablet. Along the bottom edge is the proprietary power connector, flanked by two relatively loud but harsh-sounding speakers under grilles.

Unlike the smaller Excite 7.7, with its vibrant AMOLED display, the Excite 10 uses a standard Gorilla Glass coated LCD with an increasingly common 1,280-by-800-pixel resolution. That's not to say the 149.5-pixel-per-inch, 10.1-inch screen is bad; it's reasonably sharp and gets sufficiently bright. But it lags behind top Android competitors like the Asus Transformer Prime TF201?($499.99, 4 stars) with its brighter 1,280-by-800-pixel Super IPS+ display. And it's no match for the New iPad's 264-pixel-per-inch, 2,048-by-1,536 display.

There's a 2-megagpixel front-facing camera and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera. And like with most tablets, you'll only want to rely on the Excite 10 for casual photos and videos, as the cameras aren't great. The Excite 10 is a Wi-Fi-only tablet that connects to 802.11b/g/n networks on the 2.4GHz band only. You also get integrated GPS and Bluetooth 3.0.

Performance and Software
The Excite 10 is powered by the same quad-core 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 processor found on both the 7.7 and 13-inch models. As such, performance is largely uniform across the board, with very good overall system marks. These are among the fastest Android tablets available right now, and the Excite 10 delivers performance on par with the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, as well as Acer's quad-core powered Iconia Tab A510?($449.99, 3 stars). The base model ships with 16GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by a full-sized SD card (our 64GB SanDisk microSD card with SD adapter worked fine). I did notice occasional hang-ups, however, when adding and removing SD cards, and in a few instances I had to perform a hard reset. Otherwise, everything runs smoothly, whether it's switching between multiple running apps, watching HD video, or playing a demanding game like Riptide GP.

In the Excite line, Toshiba has left Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich untouched. There are no OS modifications, and only a few pre-loaded apps. You get third-party apps like Amazon Kindle and Quickoffice,?which are genuinely useful, as well as some Toshiba-branded apps that lead to content portals for e-books and other media. While I wouldn't consider any of them bloatware, the fact that you can't remove the apps is pesky.

Media playback was fine with H.264, MPEG4, WMV, DivX, and Xvid videos running smoothly at up to 1080p resolution. For audio, the Excite 10 played WMA, OGG, WAV, MP3, FLAC, and AAC formats without issue.

The 5-megapixel rear camera is average as far as tablet cameras go. Indoors, image noise is an issue and video frame rates drop precipitously, making the footage appear jerky. Outdoors, the 1080p video looks smooth and still images look reasonably sharp, but I wouldn?t rely on the camera for anything but casual shots.

In our battery rundown test, which loops a video with screen brightness set to maximum and Wi-Fi on, the Excite 10 lasted for 6 hours, 12 minutes. The 10-inch Transformer T300 turned in a slightly better 7 hours, 53 minutes, while the same-size Iconia Tab A510 turned in 9 hours, 34 minutes in the same test. The A510 is the bulkiest of the bunch, which makes room for a larger battery, while the Excite 10 is the slimmest of the three.

Conclusions
The Toshiba Excite 10 is everything the Excite 10 LE should have been, with a faster quad-core processor and better build quality. It's among the most-capable Android tablets available today, but you can find similar performance and more versatility in the more affordable Asus Transformer Pad TF300. Then there are Asus's docking accessories that essentially turn its tablets into netbooks. The Excite 10 is a better choice than the awkwardly large 13-inch Excite 13, but the Excite 7.7 is the best of the bunch with its excellent AMOLED screen and equally zippy performance. In the end, our Editors' Choice for large-screen tablets remains with the New iPad given its ultra-high-resolution Retina display, top-notch OS, and vast collection of tablet-centric apps.?

As CEO David Karp promised at last week's F.ounders conference, the new version of Tumblr's iOS app has now arrived. And it's a doozy. (I mean that in a very good way). The app is completely redesigned, a lot faster, and offers a ton of new features ranging from Spotify support to gesture-based shortcuts. The first thing you'll notice, of course, upon logging in, is a radically different new post screen. While the app had previously featured colorful icons for things like "text," "photo," "audio," and "video," etc., the new post screen has gone for a black background with richer, bolder icons. It almost gives Tumblr's iOS app an Android-like feel, to be honest.

How Combat Tai Chi Uses Traditional Chinese Medicine Part I - Artipot

Chinese civilization has studied both medicine and the martial arts for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. It would be surprising if a blending of these traditions had not taken place. Behind the graceful movements of Tai Chi practice lies a combat art that is as sophisticated as it is deadly.

Combat Tai Chi relies on meridian theory elaborated by Traditional Chinese Medicine. Running through the body, there are pathways of energy. The energy or qi that runs through the body is not a mystical substance. Instead, chi can be understood in western scientific terms in light of physics and biology. Meridian theory is one of the building blocks of of acupuncture, Qigong and other Chinese healing arts.

Tai Chi is best-known for its health benefits. Many people in the United States practice Tai Chi in order to live healthier lives while paying little attention to the martial aspects of the art. In order to fight well, a martial artist must be in good health in general. Among many other health benefits, Tai Chi develops the health of its practitioners through encouraging good flow of chi through the meridians of the body. This basic level of health is a foundation on which other aspects of the art are built. Tai Chi enables its practitioners to direct qi or energy in a combat setting in order to do damage against opponents.

There are many different meridian lines in the body. For example, the kidney meridian runs from the bottom of the foot in the middle up through the kidney area up through the top of the chest area to the underside of the back of the tongue. In some places, the meridians are deeply buried in the body and are therefore hard to access for a health professional such as an acupuncturist or for a martial artist.

However, in other places, the meridians run right underneath the surface of the skin. These easy access points to the meridians are pressure points. You might have had a friend or a massage therapist press hard on a pressure point spot in order to release tension. This technique is actually using the meridians of the body.

In the United States, pressure point strikes are the most well-known (though not very well understood) martial application of Chinese Traditional Medicine. A martial artist hits a specific point or combination of points on the body yielding a knockout or some other dramatic effect. Tai Chi uses these kinds of hits in many different ways.

Pressure point strikes can be used to accomplish a wide variety of goals. Some of them can cause the muscles or tendons on an opponent to seize up or even displace bones. Others directly affect the meridians of the body. There are pressure point strikes that can cause blockages in meridians or reverse the flow of chi. Others can even reverse or close off the flow of blood through veins or arteries.

In part II: Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine team up for deadly force with Dim Mak or Death Touch.

1 day

It's easy to click the "report" button on Facebook, but what exactly happens once you do? The social network's safety team has a handy-dandy breakdown.

In a post on the Facebook Safety page, it's explained that the social network has?multiple teams dedicated to handling reports made by users, 24/7:

Hundreds of Facebook employees are in offices throughout the world to ensure that a team of Facebookers are handling reports at all times. For instance, when the User Operations team in Menlo Park is finishing up for the day, their counterparts in Hyderabad are just beginning their work keeping our site and users safe.

There are four types of teams which review reports ??the Safety team, the Hate and Harassment team, the Access team, and the Abusive Content team.?The cited reason for a report determines which of the teams will see it. "For example, if you are reporting content that you believe contains graphic?violence, the Safety Team will review and assess the report," the blog post offers.

If one of the teams' members finds that reported content violates Facebook's policies, then he or she can remove the content, warn the user who posted it, revoke a user's ability to share particular types of content, disable certain features for a user, completely disable a Facebook account or?escalate?an issue to law enforcement.

Alternatively, if content does not violate Facebook's policies, the social network offers ways?for users to directly communicate "to better resolve their issues beyond simply blocking or unfriending another user."
