The talk in the aftermath of the selection of the Dolphins as the 2012 subjects of HBO?s Hard Knocks series has begun to mirror in duration the chatter and speculation that emerged before the Dolphins got the gig.

And that?s good for the Dolphins, HBO, NFL Films, and the NFL generally, since the more that people are talking about the show now, the more likely those people ? and more ? will be to watch the show come August.

On Wednesday, at a joint Dolphins/HBO/NFL Films press conference, a producer from the league-owned camera-and-microphone shop made a somewhat surprising declaration.

?[D]espite what you read, we did not offer the show to any other team but the Dolphins,? NFL Films senior coordinating producer Ross Ketover said, via the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Jim Harbaugh approves of this message.

But Ketover at least acknowledged that, even though an offer was made only to the Dolphins, other teams were approached.? ?We cast a wide net,? Ketover said? ?We talk to a lot of teams to gauge their interest.? Some are very interested.? Some are interested with caveats that are not acceptable with us.? Others say we?ll do it in future years.? Others are not interested.?

Though Harbaugh would say that those teams were ?evaluated? and not ?pursued,? it?s likely that many of the teams who said they turned down Hard Knocks had merely been contacted in an effort to determine whether they would be interested, that they said they aren?t, and that it wasn?t an offer, per se.

That said, it was widely reported that the Falcons had been offered the assignment, and that they turned it down.? It?s probably a matter of semantics, with HBO/NFL Films simply asking teams, ?If we offer, would you accept?? before actually making the offer.? That would explain the Jets? position that no offer was made this year.

Thus, regardless of whether the Dolphins were the only choice, they will continue to be perceived as something other than the first choice.

What does microcontroller programming have in common with Tetris? Quite a bit if you're doing it with Modkit Micro from a Kickstarter project out of Cambridge, MA., which allows almost anyone to visually set up their hardware using graphical blocks to write the code. The partially-hooded trio behind it promises that the software is ideal for use with prototyping boards from Arduino, Evil Mad Science, Lilypad, Seeed Studio, Wiring and SparkFun, and they even claim that elementary school students have used it to "take their projects from concept to reality in just a few hours." Purists should have no fear either: you can still get into a code view to see what's going on behind the scenes. A web-based Modkit Micro is being offered online starting June 1st for $25, and there'll be a desktop variant for Windows, OSX, and Linux as early as July if they reach their funding target. Sikkim NOW!: Sikkim applicants now required to approach Matigara IT office for IT Exemption Certificates VISHNU NEOPANEY GANGTOK, 27 May: Residents of Sikkim who are exempted under the Income Tax Act, Section 27 AAA, will have to henceforth approach the Tax Deduction at Source (TDR) Wing of the Matigara Zonal Income Tax office in Siliguri for IT Exemption Certificates. The Regional Office of the IT Department at Kolkata, in its meeting with regional heads and Officers In-charge of different districts [Malda, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong] including Sikkim, on 14 May directed the Gangtok office not to issue any more IT Exemption Certificates since this power did not fall in its jurisdiction. Till now, the Aayakar Bhawan at Gangtok, established in 2008, had been issuing the IT exemption certificates. The 14 May meeting resolved that the Gangtok office is mandated to handle only the revenue section for IT assessment. Other tasks like TDS directions and Tax refunds are not delegated to it. So far, because Direct Tax laws were new to Sikkim, the Gangtok IT office was also issuing IT exemption certificates [to Sikkim Subjects and their descendents], for the convenience of the people here, on the verbal direction of senior officials. Direct Tax Laws came into force in Sikkim on 21 June, 2008 and the Income Tax Department is represented here by an Assistant Income Tax Officer. The Ministry of Finance, Tax Department, has set up an office here to manage IT returns in Sikkim. Sikkim is in a transitional phase in terms of Direct Taxes and the Ministry of Finance and Regional IT Office at Kolkata have not yet felt it necessary to set up the other wings in Sikkim. As a result, a large number of people are still unaware of Direct Tax norms like filing of returns, claims and TDS or the importance of PAN and TIN numbers. The Gangtok office has already begun directing applicants the TDS wing of the Zonal Matigara Office, Siliguri for IT exemption certificates. IT officials in Siliguri informed NOW! over the phone that after receiving the exemption application from applicants, the Zonal Office will forward the applications for Regional Office verification and after receiving the IT clearance from Gangtok office, the exemption will be granted by the Regional Office if found appropriate. What is required now for the convenience of the people is for the State Government to approach the Ministry of Finance seeking establishment of other wings of the IT Department in Sikkim.

Choosing an Adventure Travel Specialist

Choices

The choice of how to go about arranging and preparing for your adventures gets wider by the day. Besides the more recent tantalizing options for direct booking provided on the internet, in the last 30 years the number of companies, organisations and operators worldwide has grown from a handful of enthusiasts, and small specialist lifestyle businesses to large corporations who take thousands of bookings each year. Where do you begin? or as they would say in Sikkim ?Kay Gurnay? - " What to do?"

The Gamble

It has been said that arranging your adventures is akin to buying "futures" in the commodities market. You think you know what you have bought, you certainly won't have seen it, you have committed funds in advance, and you have made an assessment that the risk will pay off and you will be satisfied with the rewards.

You have made an educated gamble, for which you have had the privilege of committing your irrevocable credit or paying up front.

Arranging an adventure really involves you seeing your preparations in a similar fashion. You are certainly going to be committing funds in advance for an experience that you hope will be all that you expect it to be, and you are putting yourself (a very important commodity) in the middle of it. So your own care towards yourself and your plans needs to be very good! It is vital that you make the right decision, that suits your adventure and it's success. If you are not taking sole charge of all the arrangements yourself, you need to pick the right tour operator or agency to suit what you want to achieve. You will be deciding on the delegation of much of what is described in these pages, and paying someone else to address each of these topics for you

What do you want?

Before you decide what kind of company or organisation to approach, or even if you are not going to approach one at all, there are a few questions you will need to ask yourself. Try to have some idea of the time of year you want to travel, the amount of time you have to do so, and the adventure itself. In fact start with what sort of adventure you want.

Is it a new quite straightforward experience? ? visiting somewhere you have only ever dreamt about before? Something inspired by others who have set out before you to achieve an amazing personal "best or first"?? A quest for knowledge?? An insight into differing cultures? Or a spiritual journey even searching out fabled legends and religious myths? A journey back in time to discover family history? An enterprise or escapade to find "something lost"? - Buried artefacts, hidden treasures or something "rumoured to be", but as yet unfound - like Jimmy Angel's gold secreted on the vast rock plug tepuis and mountain tops of the Venezuelan forests.

If you are still unable to decide, then the adventure travel company will be happy to make suggestions for you to consider, based on your interests, and what you tell them about yourself, and your ambitions.

Available Preparation Time?

Next, look at your time available. Today this is the most vital of ingredients in the pre-departure stage. How much time do you have to devote to arranging your adventure?? Plenty? Great, plan it yourself, if you want to?..Limited to weekends? Perhaps you could do with some professional help??. No time at all? You can make the airport, if someone gives you the right flight number and departure gate. Do you even want to make the time available for planning? Would you prefer to allocate your free time to something else? Why not? You may feel that you do not have the confidence at this stage to plan on your own. Fine, make this adventure an "off the shelf" escapade or one with "bought in" services

Time to look at the type of companies that can help you. Many of them are noted by name in the reference section.

National Chains of Travel Agents

Wandering down the high street, just about anywhere it would be impossible to miss the national branded travel agents. The core of their business comes from conventional holidays and travel. The shop will be full of racks of seasonal brochures and the staff will have been taught how to sell off the page. Some of the more senior staff will have likely visited some summer and winter resorts on familiarization trips (called FAM trips) with the intention of giving them the ability to sell from "first hand" experience. The commitment to bespoke planning for F.I.T.s (free independent travellers) was seen some years ago as not being a viable profit centre to the mainstream business of the nationals, and most of them have stopped giving this type of service. Basically with the national chains, if it is on the shelf, and you can buy it subject to availability.

Independent Travel Agents

Independent travel agents are also on the high street, but more often than not, not in such a prime location, and they may need a little "scouting out". These are very often partnership or family businesses and very often the owners learnt their trade in travel with one of the national chains. A good many of them are more versatile than the national chains and give good customer service. Some have not discarded the old skills of independent planning and for some adventures that do not go "beyond the road head" or involve skilled activities or specialist knowledge (wildlife or culture?). They are very good at providing the "in country" travel facilities, accommodation, and other straightforward logistics. Some of them hold agencies for adventure tour operators, but do not have the in house knowledge to support any but superficial questions. For example, it is unlikely that they could provide an answer to the various problems a trekker might encounter at altitude. They would have to? "make a call" and while they would be happy to take a booking, they would be nothing more than an interface between you and the tour operator.

Adventure Travel Agents

Adventure travel agents are a new breed to the trade. Usually a sole trader, or partnership with no interest in conventional aspects of package travel. They only hold agencies for adventure tour operators and they are a very good starting point for the first time adventurer. They should offer impartial advice on the different tour operator' products. Some of the staff may have first hand experience of packaged adventure travel, and may have even worked as a group leader in Africa, South America or parts of Asia. The general knowledge will be good solid stuff, and advice and tips, practical and down to earth. Remember that they will be passing you to a tour operator to manage your day to day itinerary, and will not be acting or making arrangements directly on you behalf.

Tour Operators based in UK

Tour operators based in UK, plan and operate their own programmes aboard. They are usually privately owned and the principals have many years experience of the countries in which they operate, and first class contact at all levels of commerce and local government pertinent to travel, general trading and society. They generally fall into two categories. Those that promote and sell a more general formalised adventure providing insights into a wide aspect of cultures and landscapes, but keep to a very well trodden and established path and routine with very formalised and structured itineraries. There is usually little or no flexibility in what they provide. Let there be no mistake however, these companies have some really great programmes with well trained managers, and they are well handled and organised in the main. Often they cater for sizeable groups of all abilities and ages and the structure of the daily plan is tailored to suit the widest range of needs or limitations. Such operator's programmes are ideal for those "putting a toe in to test the water" on their route to more individual adventures in the future. They provide a great starting point for a first experience and a not too steep learning curve.

The second category often provide experienced leaders for their groups who also know the country well, and have an in-depth knowledge of unusual topics (the Ornithology of Central Ethiopia, Marsh lilies of Dhal Lake, the salt trading route of Nepal and Sikkim etc).

Their programmes are invariably imaginative, off the beaten track, can sometimes be physically more demanding, and require clients to be flexible in attitude as well as having an easy going out look. Quite often their clients have had some previous travel experience of a similar, but milder form with the first type of operator and will be looking for a particular, specific adventure that takes them deeper into the aspects of a country that is their real interest. Operators of this type also might have fixed departures, usually for no more than six or eight people, perhaps a maximum of ten, but very occasionally they do not "fill" to the required minimum level to cover the costs and viability, and they will consolidate people onto other programmes or departure dates in an attempt not to disappoint them, and to keep the departure a commercial proposition as well. This is not always their "fault", bookings get cancelled, and very often for very understandable reasons - ill health, a change in working circumstances and unforeseen family matters are the most common. Sometimes operators do not make the decision to cancel or consolidate until ten weeks or so before the departure date. If it happens at all, and it is not very often, it should not happen at less than eight weeks before departure as by then all the clients will have paid for their adventure in full. Just so you know - A cancellation at this point, should this happen to you for medical reasons, should be covered by your travel insurance, so you should not be badly out of pocket, if at all.

To ensure that you are not exposed to such vagaries of your potential fellow travellers bear in mind that these specialist operators excel at individual planning and bespoke itineraries, which contrary to most people's belief, seldom costs more than a "fixed departure" and in this category there are those operators that only plan individual itineraries to your request. These operators are also the core of the UK adventure industry in terms of real involvement, concern, and sensible understanding and commitment to ecological and sustainable tourism issues

Operators Overseas

Operators based abroad usually began as "in country" ground agents and they probably still are providing such services for some of the tour operators in UK, and elsewhere. To day, they effectively have dual roles. They facilitate group needs for the clients of western adventure travel companies under a contract and fixed price. This will include all the logistics, client support, and staffing. They also promote their own "parallel adventures" via the Internet under the same or a different trading name.

It is advisable to remember that they use the best facilities and staff for their contracts, which are their main income first, their own programmes next, and casual F.I.Ts, Internet bookings, and "walk ins" get what ever is left over. Or what can be hired at short notice or is available - and that is usually only sub standard facilities or unskilled staff.

Websites

There are some very good referral only websites that set criteria for the companies they list in their sites to meet ranging from the? operators involvement with responsible tourism, ecological projects and they way that they interact with their clients. They carry out regular audits on the companies, and actively ask for feed back from those who have used the site to select an adventure or a bespoke planning service. These site are financed by a fixed annual fee, or by a commission being paid to them if clients bock through the website introduction.

Internet Only Operators

Getting speedy and regular replies to your email does not mean that you are dealing with anything more than some one connected to the net who has a website. Only make your enquires and bookings if you are completely convinced that the company you are making your arrangements with exists, or that you actually know the people. A telephone call does not count. Have you met them, seen their offices, do you know other people who have successfully dealt with them? Phantom Services are out there. People have booked all sorts of non-existent car hire, hotels, and other services and paid in advance. Do not leave yourself open to joining the list.

Charitable/Adventure Organisations

When it comes to planning or selecting the type of fund raising adventure that you might like to be involved with, contact with some of the charity/adventure organisations can be very confusing for you. Some organisations have their enquiries and even bookings managed by their fund raising departments, some of whom have volunteer staff that each week are giving their time to a different aspect of the charity. Often these people, while trying to be helpful, can only repeat to you what you already know i.e. the description of the charitable adventure that you have enquired about -so that won't help you much. As this market has mushroomed, a few of the charity adventure programmes appear to be poorly thought out, and not well managed. These fund raising adventures are designed to appeal to your good nature, and seem to want to provide a type of " righteous purpose" for your efforts. Do not be bamboozled. Look for those charities that have a three way integrity for their fundraising adventures? - a great adventure for you, sensible fund raising targets for you personally, and well established and respectful working relationships in the countries in which the adventure will be based.

There is also a very good book called "Green Volunteers" that will help you see what you can do in various parts of the world that will be of very real benefit in this type of work, and provide you with great adventures as well.

Value for Money and the Profit Myth.

There are some real misunderstandings as to the profits made through adventure by the majority of adventure travel companies. Practically every one of these providers, no matter what aspect they do provide for you, are in this market place because they love it ? and believe in it. Yes, they need to pay the staff, the rent, and the overheads just like any other business, but the real reward is seeing people return from their adventures who are spellbound by the experiences that have been provided for them. Very often these are the experiences of a lifetime.

The average three week long haul adventure costs about ?2500.00 to ?3000.00 per person. Some of the more elite adventures will cost more and take more time, obviously; climbing Mt. Everest is currently ?26,000 per person and you should allow two and a half months. Perhaps it will surprise you that the average retained profit per person will be about 15%. When you think of all the various aspects and commitments that are put into being on your behalf, the safeguards, administrative back up here in UK and in the locations of your adventures as well as the hard won specialist knowledge that you will have been able to draw upon (and rely upon) before departure, and through out the adventure, this has to be good value. You may also have a leader who is travelling with you, who will be with you to answer your questions, deal with your need, problems, worries and any concerns for the whole duration of your adventure. You have a knowledgeable expert for 24hrs a day for the whole of your adventure! There are very few other trades or professions that are prepared to provide such services at costs like these.

The Mindset

What ever you decide, it is important that you start with the mindset that you want to build a good professional working relationship with the individuals in the company you eventually pick. You want the relationship to be one that is financially fair to both parties, and you especially want their knowledge to be pertinent to your plan, up to date and based, if possible, on personal experience of the country and terrai

Adventure travel planners and providers will react to you in a generous spirited, open, informative manner.

Some of you may be already thinking that organising your own adventure to is not what you had in mind even from the outset. Your available time to undertake the preparations and planning may be limited, or you may have already thought it advantageous to "buy in" the skills.

Today (at the very simplest level) it is possible for you to make a telephone call, make a booking, pay in advance for all services, and when you arrive in country everything is there for you. Your only need has been to turn up on time at the correct airport, with the right clothing and equipment. For those people with limited time for preparation due to busy lives and work schedules using the services of full time specialists is a very sound option. There are even companies to get you to the summit of Mt Everest, to the depths of the caves of Mulu and to both the North and South Poles, and hundreds more of such "extreme" adventures.

The 'Dawson's Creek' actor rejected the chance to audition for the part of Sack Lodge - the onscreen boyfriend of Rachel McAdams' character - in the 2005 comedy movie because he was "worried" about being portrayed in a "certain way", but he now wishes he had gone up against Bradley Cooper for the job.

He said: "I look at some of my decisions in that time and I think, 'Why did I do that?'.

The 35-year-old star added: "In retrospect I look back and I'm grateful. But it was an exhausting six-year marathon. I was shooting movies or doing photo shoots when the show was on hiatus.

"It was just a really long haul and I felt burnt out when it ended. I needed time to duck away and disappear, figure things out and grow up a bit. When I was 24 the character I played on TV was a teenager losing his virginity."

(AP) ? They twirled, they sniffed, they slurped, they chewed.

The dozen housewives who gathered in a Rome hotel on a recent afternoon took their work terribly seriously, rating plates of pasta for chewiness, saltiness, gumminess or done-ness ? that perfect balance known as "al dente," or firm to the bite.

Pasta is serious business in Italy, and the recent blind taste test organized by the world's biggest pasta maker drove home that an awful lot of thought goes into making the simple combination of durum wheat semolina and water from which Italy's national dish is made.

"The simpler it is, the more testing it takes," said Stefania Fochi, in charge of consumer testing for market leader Barilla, which organized the taste test.

Pasta sales worldwide have grown steadily over the past three years, to euros 22.3 billion last year, according to Euromonitor research. In Italy, however, sales have fallen steadily over that same timeframe as the economy suffers and stores are forced to offer discounts. National pasta sales dropped to euros 2.7 billion last year from euros 3.1 billion in 2009 ? meaning spaghetti makers in these days of austerity need to try harder to keep their customers loyal.

Granted, in Italy, it's not a huge challenge given that most Italians eat a plate of pasta ? be it spaghetti alla carbonara, penne al ragu or orecchiette with broccoli ? at least once a day. But they are terribly discerning customers: A noodle is not just a noodle.

"Some were sticky, some were good, al dente and cooked the right amount of time," said Stefania De Rossi, a 46-year-old mother of three who was selected for the taste test because of her family's daily pasta habit. "I liked the last one (identified only by its code name: V36). It wasn't super smooth, it was a bit rough but seemed better."

Her pickiness stems in part from Italians' particular obsession with food: Eating in Italy is taken very seriously on both a family and cultural level. The Slow Food movement was born here and you can smell, see and taste this way of life at this time of year in outdoor markets, exploding with bundles of fresh asparagus now that the green and purple hills of artichokes have begun to wane.

And what better way to enjoy those asparagus tips than to sautee them in olive oil with bits of speck, a smoky cut of prosciutto, and toss the whole thing with a small mound of linguine?

"Pasta is truly the symbol, the emblem not just of Italian food ... but the principal plate of the Mediterranean diet," said Amelia Germoleo, vice director of the National Pasta Museum in Rome. "It's profoundly rooted in the culture, the lifestyle, the 'being' of Italy."

The museum, which is currently closed for renovations, seeks to enlighten visitors about pasta's past, including the very Italian origins of dried pasta, the stuff that comes in packages and can be preserved, as opposed to egg-based fresh pasta that must be eaten quickly.

It turns out Marco Polo didn't bring spaghetti to the West from China. Rather, Germoleo said, the earliest known origins of dried pasta date from 12th century Sicily. The Norman king of Sicily, King Ruggero II, instructed a geographer to write a book about all that was known of the world.

In 1138, the geographer, Idrisi, reported back that the settlement of Trabia, west of Palermo, was making a type of vermicelli that was "sufficient to provide not only for Calabria but also the Muslim and Christian territories, where numerous cargoes are sent by sea," according a citation of the book in a museum publication, "Time for Pasta."

"This debunks the myth that Marco Polo brought it from China," Germoleo said. "Dried pasta is absolutely Italian."

Agostino Macri, a food security expert at the National Consumer's Union, said that pasta was in the "genome of Italians."

"A good dish of pasta puts you in a good mood," he said. But he cautioned against going overboard in consuming it, particularly with specialties like spaghetti all'amatriciana, a heavy dish using tomatoes and bacon-like pancetta that is common on Roman trattoria menus.

"It has a lot of calories," he warned.

The pasta that was served to the blind tasters had none of that: simply spaghetti tossed with a dash of olive oil. Each of the five brands tested ? Barilla, De Cecco, Gragnano and supermarket brands Coop and Conad ? was cooked in 1 liter of water salted with 7 grams of sea salt for every 100 grams of pasta.

While each sample cooked, women in white lab coats and latex gloves handed out small packets of noodles as they appear in the package, giving the whole affair a sterile, clinical feel when most Italians would tuck into a plate of pasta around the dinner table.

The testers ran their fingers slowly over the slender sticks, caressed them, noted the flecks of brown on the golden strands of semolina and the slight roughness of the grain in their hands. And then they answered an 11-page questionnaire asking them how the color, thickness, smell, taste and texture appealed to them. The results aren't for public consumption, Barilla said.

"For us the pasta is very important, especially for me," Gabriella Brescia said after sampling her five dishes as she packed up and headed home. "I could give up everything except pasta."

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? Scores of Maine churches will pass the collection plate a second time at Sunday services on Father's Day to kick off a fundraising campaign for the lead opposition group to November's ballot question asking voters to legalize same-sex marriages.

Between 150 and 200 churches are expected to raise money for the Protect Marriage Maine political action committee, said Carroll Conley Jr., executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine evangelical organization and a member of the PAC. Conley is also trying to drum up support for the Maine campaign from religious leaders from around the country.

It's unusual, but not unheard of, for churches to take up collections for political causes. Maine's Catholic diocese says it raised about $80,000 with a designated collection in 2009 in its effort to overturn Maine's same-sex marriage law, which was passed by the Legislature that year and later rejected by voters. The Catholic church isn't actively campaigning this time, instead focusing on teaching parishioners about the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman Father's Day, June 17, seemed an appropriate time to kick off this year's fundraising campaign because of the day's focus on family, Conley said. Additional collection-plate offerings at churches are expected in the months ahead.

"The messaging we're using is that those who are seeking to redefine marriage in Maine believe there's no difference between moms and dads," Conley told The Associated Press. "We believe those differences are relevant. We don't think the differences in the genders are societally imposed roles, and we believe that children benefit when they're in that ideal environment where there's a mom and dad."

Protect Marriage Maine has been in contact with about 800 churches across the state and expects 150 to 200 to participate in the Father's Day collections, Conley said. They include Methodist, Baptist, Pentecostal, Nazarene, Church of God, Wesleyan, Evangelical Free, Advent Christian and other denominations.

While many churches are joining the campaign against the referendum, others of various denominations are working to support the ballot measure.

Some churches have hosted phone banks where congregation members have made calls in favor of the referendum, said the Rev. Sue Gabrielson, the minister at the Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church. Other churches have held educational forums and training sessions on door-to-door canvassing.

The referendum, she said, is about inclusion, a "loving God" and being nonjudgmental and compassionate.

"What we want is for people to know that this is a religious issue," she said.

Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, who created an international uproar when he became the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican church in 2003, is coming to Maine in early June on behalf of the campaign in support of gay marriage. He will appear at three screenings of the film "Love Free or Die," which depicts his life, in Portland, Lewiston and Ellsworth.

Churches in Maine and elsewhere have raised money from parishioners for political campaigns in the past on issues including gay rights, doctor-assisted suicide, abortion and gambling.

Federal law prohibits churches and other 501(c) (3) charitable organizations from supporting or opposing candidates running for office, either through financial contributions or endorsements, said Brent Walker, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, a Washington advocacy group that supports separation of church and state.

"But they can, with near impunity, support issues and causes, including same-sex marriage referenda," Walker said.

Supporters of Maine's ballot question have said they expect to raise $5 million or more for their campaign. Opponents have said they expect to raise far less, but collection plate offerings will go a long way toward helping fund the campaign, Conley said.

Conley has been in Washington, D.C., this week at a pastors conference organized by the conservative Family Research Council. There, he met with other gay marriage opponents from Minnesota, Washington and Maryland, where same-sex marriage ballot initiatives are being debated.

Minnesota will decide in November whether a ban on gay marriage should be part of the state constitution. Maryland and Washington are expected to have ballot measures seeking to overturn same-sex marriage laws that were recently passed by their legislatures.

Conley's also seeking endorsements from well-known pastors who might be willing to record video and audio clips that can be played at churches taking part in Maine's collection-plate drive, he said. Those clips would also be sent to the state's Christian radio stations as public service announcements.

Conley said he realized churches should play a central role in the Maine campaign after being in North Carolina earlier this month when voters approved an amendment to the state constitution affirming that marriage may only be a union of a man and a woman.

"I was impressed with the coordination I saw among the faith community in North Carolina," he said.

Overview of the Xbox 360 game console

The Xbox game console is a video game system manufactured by Microsoft. Due to the huge popularity of its predecessor the Xbox, the 360's 2005 debut was a highly anticipated one. (AP) ? Fifty-five years after its publication, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" is finally burning on the big screen.

Everyone from Marlon Brando to Jean-Luc Godard to Brad Pitt has circled the classic 1957 novel over the last six decades, but Walter Salles' adaptation is the first to actually get made. The wait isn't for lack of desire: Kerouac passionately wanted to see his book made a film, even writing Brando a letter promising that he could turn the book's lyrical road trips into a "movie-type structure."

"On the Road" premiered Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival, far away from the American roads crisscrossed by Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty, the characters modeled on Kerouac and Neal Cassady, respectively.

"Unless you revive it by rereading it, re-imagining it, performing it, it's a dead thing," said Viggo Mortensen, who plays the William S. Burroughs character in the film. "You have to reread it to make it live again."

The pun is inevitable: It has been a long road for "On the Road." Though there was interest in a Hollywood adaptation as soon as it was published, nothing came of various negotiations and attempted screenplays. Francis Ford Coppola purchased the novel's rights in 1979, and he, too, failed to grasp an interpretation.

It's his son, the director Roman Coppola, who's producing "On the Road," which is being released in various international countries over the next few months, with a U.S. release prepared for late fall by IFC Films and Sundance Selects.

The Brazilian director Salles became involved after making another road movie: 2004's "The Motorcycle Diaries," which chronicled a South American trip by a young Che Guevara. The "On the Road" screenplay is also by the writer of "The Motorcycle Diaries," Jose Rivera.

Both films, Salles said in a press conference for the film Wednesday, are about "a social and political awakening."

"It's about the search of that last frontier that they will never find," Salles said. "It's about also discovering that this is the end of the road and the end of the American dream."

Much of the problem in adapting "On the Road" is its meandering narrative in which Paradise (played by Sam Riley) and Moriarty make a series of cross-country road trips in post-World War II America, where their intellectual, passionate bohemian ways (and copious amounts of cigarettes, booze and marijuana) sometimes clash with a more conservative society. There are many girls along the way, who are played by Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Elisabeth Moss and Alice Braga.

"On the Road" gets the group's passionate, carnal camaraderie, but it struggles more (as was perhaps inevitable) to capture the white hot pulse of Kerouac's book, which was famously written in three weeks on a long scroll (though that story underestimates Kerouac's earlier notebook writing).

Kerouac writes: "The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles."

"Those characters in the book had the courage to experience everything in the flesh," said Salles.

But to make the early days of the Beat Generation (Tom Sturridge plays the Allen Ginsberg character) alive again, Salles went to great lengths for realism. He spent five years making an unreleased documentary on the book and says the entire process of making the film covered nearly 100,000 kilometers (more than 62,000 miles).

Descendants of the book's real-life inspirations were also consulted and Salles held a four-week "boot camp" for the cast before starting shooting in Montreal to soak up Beat history. Stewart, who plays Moriarty's girlfriend Marylou, says she poured over audio tapes of Luanne Henderson, her character's inspiration, and met with Henderson's daughter.

"I genuinely felt like I could look up in a moment where I wasn't getting somewhere or a moment where I was feeling like I was reaching too hard or too desperately," said Stewart. "I felt her. And I would have never had that without her daughter or those tapes."

Whether "On the Road," the film, will seem as relevant to audiences now remains to be seen. Mortensen suggested the story bears particular contemporary resonance in a time of youthful protests over the economic collapse and in the Arab Spring.

Said Mortensen: "I think it was worth the wait."
