NYT's Chris Buckley Expelled From China - Business Insider

New York Times journalist Chris Buckley was forced to leave China today after his annual media accreditation and residence visa were denied, John Garnaut of the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

While the official reason behind Buckley's apparent expulsion were not apparent, it is widely believed that Buckley was forced to leave due to a Times expose written by David Barboza that revealed the vast family fortunes of outgoing Chinese premier Wen Jiabao.

According to tweets from Beijing-based writer and Baidu employee Kaiser Kuo, Barboza and other members of the Times staff in China have not had problems with new visas.

Wen has strongly denied the accusations that his family were worth over $2 billion, and his lawyers had hinted at legal action against the Times. The New York Times' website has been blocked in China since the article.

A similar article about incoming President Xi Jinping's family finances resulted in Bloomberg being blocked, and reports of death threats against the authors.

Buckley, an Australian, had been working as a journalist in China for 12 years. His entire family were forced to leave the country. Garnaut describes Buckley as having a "a reputation in China for balance and rigour".

Earlier this year Al Jazeera's Melissa Chan was also refused a new visa for work in China. It is widely believed it was due to the strength of her reporting from the country.

UPDATE: The New York Times' own report on the situation clarifies the situation a little. Buckley had applied to transfer from Reuters to the Times for 2013, but the accreditation process had taken an unusually (suspiciously?) long time, forcing Buckley to leave.

The Times' new Beijing bureau chief, Philip P. Pan, is also waiting for his new accreditation, the Times reports.

Gulf firms rework mobility strategies ? 70% of businesses feel global ...

KUWAIT: In a globally connected world, companies both in the Middle East and across the globe, are readdressing their mobility strategies; many surveyed organizations plan to review their global mobility strategies in 2013, says Maya Rafii Zaatari, director, Human Resources, Deloitte Middle East.

Organizations are aware of both the requirements and the current limitations of their global mobility programs; however they are not translating that awareness into improvement and change, according to a new report by Deloitte. This is based on the latest annual survey of almost 200 HR, talent and global mobility professionals from companies around the world, entitled Strategic Moves. Findings in this study are particularly relevant to Middle East companies moving into regionalization structures, and international markets to compete effectively in these new markets and succeed in attracting and deploying employees and leaders to meet their business objectives. ?As more and more companies expand their operations globally, and many companies based in the Middle East begin to operate across the region, the challenge to source the right talent and meet client needs is evidently growing. Many regional firms are seeking candidates with international experience to assume leadership posts in different industries,? said Zaatari. In many Middle Eastern countries, particularly in the GCC, it is integral that strategies to improve global mobility are put into place, to ensure the right expertise is being offered to clients when needed,? she added. Brett Walsh, Global Human Capital leader, DTTL, says: ?The survey results show that organizations recognize the need for a global, mobile workforce to support their business strategies.

However, despite a keen awareness of worldwide mobility issues, there is slow progress to make the relevant improvements. Where organizations are taking steps, they appear to be aligning their international mobility strategies with functional needs, rather than also focusing on developing the next generation of global leaders with international experience required to run the global organizations of the future.? According to the report, a mere 2% of organizations see their global mobility functions as world class, and only 12% perform assessments of their mobility practices and make clear links back to improvement efforts they need to make. The Deloitte survey also highlights that 70% of business and HR stakeholders believe that global mobility in their organizations is underperforming and needs improvement.

Different requirements of global mobility Organizations recognize global mobility as an important tool to support the top strategic business issues and support the business in addressing the top three strategy issues: emerging geographical markets, such as the Middle East (100%), increasing globalization (99%), and increasing competition (98%). However, on average, less than 30% are using mobility to completely address those issues. ?In a globally connected world, companies both in the Middle East and across the globe, are readdressing their mobility strategies. In fact, one third of the organizations surveyed say they are planning on reviewing their global mobility strategies in the next 12 months, including reviewing the alignment with business issues and goals,? said Zaatari. Perception of the global mobility function Survey respondents were asked whether they felt global mobility was a purely administrative function, a strategic value-add, or both. Those in business HR roles were most likely to see it as strategic (42%). However, in stark contrast, those tasked with high-level talent and reward responsibilities and the ability to elevate global mobility to the realm of strategy ? were most likely to see it as just administrative (42%).

Assessment There is a widespread recognition of the need to improve the services that mobility teams provide; however the vast majority of organizations surveyed (88%) are undertaking only a limited assessment of the services that are currently being offered.

The way forward In order to align global mobility strategies with business? issues and goals in the longer term, global mobility will need to support business more effectively by providing global workforce management, where they manage an organization?s global supply and demand of skills and talent. This will require the mobility function to acquire new skills and capabilities. Brett Walsh concludes: ?If positioned appropriately, by adding global workforce management capabilities to its suite of services, global mobility can be the key player in solving an organization?s long-term skill supply-anddemand talent gaps. This will require a departure from the current model and a strong vision of the future. ?Organizations need to make two types of investments in order to achieve this. Firstly, they need to invest in their wider functional HR capabilities such as integrated HR, talent and global mobility technologies to facilitate global standard reporting across various employee metrics. Secondly, this initial investment will then allow them to invest ahead of the talent demand curve to create the required supply of talent to meet their future organization growth aspirations.??Agencies

DIY Chalkboard Paint | Santa Rosa Tile Supply

Chalkboard paint has been a trendy item for a few years now. Many home improvement shows, blogs, and magazines have featured it at one point or another, and with a few companies producing this paint it?s very accessible to the average consumer. Chalkboard paint is both fun and functional and can be used anywhere in a home. However, it?s most often found in only black and green. A few products in other colors are available but have only recently been easier to find and are often in far fewer colors.

Source: colorchats.benjaminmoore.com via Santa Rosa Tile?s Pinterest

There?s a solution, though! Mixing a bit of un-sanded grout into latex paint will give you a chalk-friendly surface in any color you want. Acrylic paints should work, too, but avoid oil-based paints ? they won?t create the right surface texture.

Source: centsationalgirl.com via Santa Rosa Tile?s Pinterest

The best ratio to use varies depending on who you ask, but 2 tablespoons grout per cup of paint seems like a good place to start. You can always add more grout, but don?t mix it up so thick you can?t paint with it and be sure to thoroughly mix in the grout without lumps.

As for how to use chalkboard paint? Here are just a few ideas:

  • Message board from framed plywood or a painted canvas
  • Trays ? especially great for parties because you can label what?s being served
  • Inside of a pantry or kitchen cabinet door ? perfect for grocery lists or keeping track of all those hard-to-see cans and jars
  • Mini signs for placecards or an appetizer table
  • Paint an entire refrigerator
  • Kids? rooms or playrooms can use a little chalkboard paint right on the wall

Unsanded grout can be purchased at your local tile or hardware store, or if you or someone you know recently remodeled, you might be able to snag just a little bit from them. It?s best to use regular chalk on these surfaces; chalk pens may not erase properly. Make sure you ?prime? the surface after painting but before using it by completely covering it with chalk then wiping off with a dry towel.

The Morning Wrap - The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times

On the brink: The White House and Congress are inching ever closer to the so-called "fiscal cliff." From today's New York Times: "A meeting at the White House between President Obama and Congressional leaders scheduled for Friday offered either the promise that a resolution of the fiscal debacle was in view or a portentous sign that each side was doing all it could to make sure that it could escape blame for a potential fiscal meltdown. No one was quite sure which." The Washington Post has coverage here. Today in Politico, this piece: "Why they want to go over the cliff."

Moving, but not leaving: Ronald Machen Jr., the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, is leaving the city to return to his house in suburban Maryland. But Machen tells The Washington Post he has no intention to ditch his gig as the top federal prosecutor here. ?The work we?re doing here is too important to abandon,? Machen said.

Spotlight on religious liberty: Stanford Law School has started a religious liberty law clinic, which administrators hail as the first in the country, The National Law Journal reports. The clinic's leaders said clients include a Florida prisoner who can't obtain a circumcision while incarcerated and a Muslim group facing opposition over the construction of a mosque in California.

Genuine confession? The New York Times, in partnership with The Texas Tribune, has this story today: "1980 Murder Confession Raises Calls to Require Police to Record Interrogations."

Charged again A police chief in suburban Chicago for the second time in nearly three has been arrested on a charge of drunk-driving. The town's leaders didn't take any substantial action after the first DUI case. "He had a clean record and it was a first offense," one former official said. "We considered it a very minor problem actually. Nobody was hurt, and he had a spotless record."

Finally: Public transportation riders in the District have long been able to use mobile applications to check train and bus arrivals. Now, New York City is joining the game. Well, at least for seven of the city's 24 subway lines.

Why the Internet killed the old salesman at the golf course : The ...

The salesman at the golf course

Formerly the salesman or sales manager could be doing his business during an afternoon golf with other businessmen. This setting has been portrayed and idealized over many years.

The salesman:
- Could do his business with people he knew since long
- Had a Rolodex with business cards where he could rely upon
- Was more an account manager than a sales guy

His world was organized and nothing could really interfere in his sales or customer retention process.
Business, golf and pleasure all fitted well together.

Communication technologies

Communication technologies have changed the way people do business over years:
Fax
Fax introduced the speed of immediate delivery of documents ? no physical transport required.
Thus the salesman didn?t need to visit and collect the order anymore.
That meant less face to face communications, thus less information exchanged.

Email
Email brought the increase of speed in written communications ? both ways.
There were no more delays as with mailing letters and waiting for a physical reply.
The salesman could communicate more directly and have faster interactions.
This has increased his productivity, as he could respond more quickly and could work on more deals at one time.
Additionally there is an administrative benefit as the emails are kept automatically in a folder. Hence no administrative filing and easy retrieval.

Mobile phones
Mobile phones made the salesperson available everywhere.
Previously calling could only be done in the office or at home which limited the availability during the week of a salesman.
Using a mobile phone, the salesman can discuss with the potential customers or customers anywhere and anytime.
Instead of face to face communications requiring appointments, calls could be made whenever possible and appropriate.

The Internet
The Internet has bought several changes:
1) Information distribution
The internet made company, product and services information available to interested parties and to customers, without needing to ask the salesman
The salesman was no longer in the loop with interested parties and customers
This has led to the rise of the ?Unknown Buyer?.

2) Rolodex
The Internet allowed finding and / or retrieval of possible contacts within an organization or company.
At first this started with simple searches on Google using the domain name.
Then the specific organized websites like LinkedIn, Plaxo, Jigsaw, Zoominfo, Xing, Spoke, Viadeo, ?

The partly free availability of contact information:
- Decreased the power of the salesman with the Rolodex significantly.
- Changed cold calling forever.
This has increased the competition and will continue to increase competition as people within companies have become addressable.

3) Webinars
Instead of paying a visit, sales people could set-up webinars in order to give an on-line interactive sales presentation.
No travel required for a first meeting with the interested parties: hence fewer costs and less waste of time for travel.
Again the salesman could follow-up on more leads than before and quickly move on if the potential customer is not interested.

Still playing golf?

The Salesman can still spend his days on the golf course, while his invited business friends will be receiving phone calls or emails from competition on their smart phones whilst playing golf.
By the time the game is over, the competition could already have sent a quotation by email received on the smart phone.

Are you still playing golf too ?

Indiewire's Editors and Bloggers Pick Their Top 10 Films of 2012 ...

While Leos Carax's "Holy Motors" took the top spot in Indiewire's recent 2012 poll?of more than 200 critics, journalists and tastemakers of the film world, this smaller grouping of picks from Indiewire staffers and bloggers highlights a wide range of movies large and small (but mostly small) from this year's release calendar. "Holy Motors," "Zero Dark Thirty," "Moonrise Kingdom," "The Master" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild" received plenty of expected mentions, but there are a slew of solo votes below equally worth consideration.

Participants were invited to include films released theatrically this year, but each person devised his or her own criteria.?Indiewire thanks those who took part and were brave enough to share their choices.

Please share your own Top 10 list for 2012 in the comments section at the end of this article (and don't forget to include your name).

Eric Kohn
Senior Editor and Head Critic, Indiewire

Another year, another list. While the industry is in the midst of pricey marketing campaigns for awards contenders -- dominated this time by studios with the wherewithal to position their smart fall season product as the definitive movies of the year -- critics get to play a different game. Despite several critics groups already bestowing major awards on movies released during this serendipitous window when Academy voters are paying attention, the list-making process provides a different opportunity to evaluate the past 12 months of cinema. While I have no statistics to prove it, one can assume that no two critics see the exact same movies each year, but most see a lot.

A cursory glance through the not-quite-accurate listing of 2012 releases on Wikipedia tells me I've seen around 120 new movies this year, not counting a handful of titles that actually received limited award-qualifying openings in late 2011. A more complex list might be derived from Indiewire's A-Z film library and by counting new movies that screened in 2012 at various festivals but have yet to arrive in theaters or VOD. Many of my preferences can be found on my Criticwire page, and not all of them will fit into the 10-movie limitation here. But the nice thing about lists is that despite their inherent limitations, you can make a lot of them.

The following group represent the top 10 movies that delivered, entertained, shocked, innovated or amused me more than anything else. Several of them played at festivals last year and opened in theaters months ago, with the lasting impact they've left on me since then contributing to their placement here. Only one entry hasn't screened publicly yet, and its quality shocked me to such a degree that it warranted last-minute placement here and nearly toppled my top choice. The art of list-making also encourages a representational approach: No two entries hail from the same genre or aesthetic; instead, the finalists each struck me as paragons of those aspects.

In another year, the "Zero Dark Thirty" slot might go to "Miss Bala," another lively attempt to render dangerous underground operations in close-up, visceral terms. Without Lynn Shelton's wonderfully awkward romantic comedy "Your Sister's Sister," the witty crowdpleaser of the year might be the wild Danish sex romp "Klown," with "Silver Linings Playbook" landing the runner-up spot. No filmmaker has ever appeared more legitimately frustrated than Jafar Panahi in the breathtaking "This Is Not a Film," but the hopelessly neurotic, lonesome auteur at the center of Hong Sang-soo's delightfully odd "The Day He Arrives" faces plenty of engaging hurdles. And it surprises me still that the fourth "Universal Soldier" movie delivers such a spectacular action ride that, I still believe after several viewings, it outdoes the latest James Bond entry. But if I had room for another absurd spectacle, the honor would go to Joss Whedon's "The Avengers," the best cinematic realization of comic books' pop culture appeal ever made. (Sorry, Batman.)

The possibilities of an entirely different list replacing this one points to the subjective nature of year-end analysis, the need to push away from consensus choices in order to broaden the overview of new movies, and why any given list only represents one access point to current cinema. Read the list and share your own choices in the comments if you feel you've seen enough to weigh in. If not, you know what to do: Watch the movies and decide for yourself.

The best movies released in 2012, at least according to this critic:

1. "Holy Motors"
Balls-to-the-wall crazy, beautiful and unbelievably strange. Director Leos Carax has always been a bit nutty, but here he finally flies off the rails with supremely perplexing, occasionally miraculous, always memorable results. This is a movie about movies, life, death, the human condition, monkeys, music, chaos, suicide, whatever. It's something else.

2. "Zero Dark Thirty"
Given the chance to give her story a happy ending, Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal smartly blanket it in shades of ambiguity. "Zero Dark Thirty" tracks a full range of emotions associated with the proverbial war on terror, from the naivete of its earliest stirrings to the spirit of vengeance that gave its apparent victory such a vital quality in the Western world. At the same time, the movie questions the certitude of the transition from despair to triumph, enabling "Zero Dark Thirty" to realize the power of its immediacy while giving the proceedings a lasting value. With ambitious young CIA agent Maya (Jessica Chastain) embodying the mixture of thrill and fury driving the hunt for bin Laden, Bigelow's engaging nail-biter avoids the pitfalls of "spiking the football," as the President described the danger of celebrating bin Laden's death. Instead, it's an opportunity to sober up.

3. "The Master"
A marvelously enigmatic period drama about the roots of Scientology, "The Master" may not demand 70mm projection, but it does contain a vast scope. The experiences of disgruntled WWII Navy man Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) who drunkenly stumbles onto the cult-infested ship commanded by Lancester Dodd (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), a dead ringer for Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, mostly unfold as a series of mysterious encounters rendered in varying exploratory notes by Jonny Greenwood's wondrous score. The movie brilliantly explores the vulnerability required to give oneself over to irrational conceits.

4. "This is Not a Film"
Jafar Panahi has taken risky circumstances and turned them into art. "This is Not a Film" delivers a sharp, measured critique of the conditions that now find him on his way to jail. A first-person account of the Iranian filmmaker at home awaiting news of his upcoming prison sentencing, it puts a human face on Iranian censorship. Aided by his friend, documentarian Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, Panahi muses on the state of affairs that led to his six-year prison sentencing and 20-year ban on making movies. Miraculously smuggled into Cannes just before the festival began, "This is Not a Film" is a moving expression of frustration, as well as an eloquent indictment of Iranian society.

5. "Amour"
Few directors focus on dark, existentially dreadful scenarios with the consistency of the great Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke. Less consistent in terms of style than theme, in movies like "Funny Games," "Cach?" and the Palme d'Or-winning "The White Ribbon," Haneke lingers in situations that find people trapped by circumstance and mystery. His latest, "Amour," is an incredibly focused and emotionally charged look at an elderly woman's gradual demise and her husband's attempts to cope with it. Although not exactly heartwarming, "Amour" has a more contained vision of human relationships than Haneke's previous films, without sacrificing its bleak foundation. A far cry from the dreary black-and-white photography of "The White Ribbon" or the meta narrative in "Cach?," Haneke's new movie displays extreme restraint: There's no soundtrack, a generally static camera, and the action exclusively takes place within the confines of the apartment (with the exception of a fleeting early shot). Haneke's sterile reality develops a haunting tone that imbues the characters' crushing fear of their diminished mortality with palpable dread.

6. "Your Sister's Sister"
Lynn Shelton's "Humpday" made waves for its impressive combination of improvised dialogue and keen insight into human relationships, a tricky balance achieved while also seamlessly drifting between comedy and drama. Her follow-up doesn't expand her range but applies it differently. "Your Sister's Sister" is another highly enjoyable relationship comedy, but a far quieter and contained work. Fortunately, Shelton stays within the boundaries of the material without overextending it, reaffirming the effectiveness of her homegrown approach.

7. "Tabu"
A head-scratchingly lyrical immersion in colonialist metaphor and historical memory, Portuguese director Miguel Gomes' third feature "Tabu" reaches for the dreamlike experiences of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's oeuvre with a bold structure that defies genre specifics. At the same time, for all the film's?confusing and erratic qualities, Gomes ("Our Beloved Month of August") has made a decisively cinematic work, tapping into classic film traditions while subverting them with consistent narrative invention.

8. "The Loneliest Planet"
In "Day Night Day Night," Julia Loktev told the quietly experimental tale of a young would-be suicide bomber nervously wandering through the crowd of Times Square, impressing some critics if not much of an audience beyond that. Her long-awaited follow-up, "The Loneliest Planet," deals with noticeably broader terrain and even includes a mid-size star (Gael Garcia Bernal). Both of those factors yield something closer to a conventional viewing experience than the intentionally prosaic momentum of her previous outing. It's a smart, mesmerizing and provocative expansion of her talents.?However, Loktev remains a devout minimalist whose latest work will surely alienate anyone on the opposing side of the fence when it comes to debates concerning "slow cinema," that broadly defined format for certain films with an extremely casual pace. To those naysayers, I would argue that "The Loneliest Planet" at least qualifies as an exemplary version of that vague category, but also that it earns its unhurried approach in spades. Hardly an indolent director, Loktev has much to say about a couple suffering from the inability to say much of anything.

9. "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia"
A slow-burn study of investigatory obsession and police bureaucracy, Nuri Bilge Ceylan's mesmerizing "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" plays like "Zodiac" meets "Police, Adjective." That's a tough combination to pull off: Neither David Fincher's epic tale of the infamous decade-spanning serial-killer hunt nor Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu's minimalist cop drama come with easy answers. But Ceylan has made a similarly analytical brain teaser, rendered in patient and sharply philosophical terms. While "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" has a certain kinship with Ceylan's other works, it also bears a uniquely protracted rhythm that's alternately frustrating and immersive. As a procedural, "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" implicates the audience along with its characters, and the mental workout continues long after the credits roll.

10. "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning"
With few exceptions, franchises aren't known for increasing their quality as they move along. The "Universal Soldier" series, which began with Roland Emmerich's 1992 blockbuster that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, stands out from the norm. Rather than riffing on the same appeal each time out, as the current spate of "Fast and Furious" continuations have done with success, director John Hyams has dismantled the array of direct-to-video "Universal Soldier" sequels as well as an ill-received theatrical follow-up by reinventing the entire attitude of the series. Upping his ambition after the decent reception for 2009's "Universal Soldier: Regeneration," with "Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning" Hyams delivers a remarkably satisfying action-thriller hybrid that constantly pushes ahead. It's one of the best action movies of the year simply because it keeps hitting the right beats.

Peter Knegt
Senior Editor, Indiewire

It's an obvious disclaimer that film is a highly subjective medium and that the onslaught of Top Ten lists we're all in the midst of clearly reflects that. How one views and potentially enjoys a film is largely based on one's own personality, taste or even frame of mind upon seeing it. I would never suggest the top 10 I've listed here are the best films of 2012. They're just my best.

1. "Zero Dark Thirty"
2. "Amour"
3. "Holy Motors"
4. "Magic Mike"
5. "Beasts of the Southern Wild"
6. "The Master"
7. "Your Sister's Sister"
8. "How To Survive a Plague"
9. "Moonrise Kingdom"
10. "The Perks of Being a Wallflower"

Very Honorable Mentions (in order of preference): "Take This Waltz," "This is Not a Film," "The Invisible War," "Bachelorette," "Keep The Lights On," "Lincoln," "Only The Young," "Bernie" and "The Dark Knight Rises."

Technically a 2011 release but I saw it in 2012 and it would be high on this list if it was eligible: "In The Family."

Note: I regretfully did not see "Django Unchained," "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia," or "Tabu" (yet).

I find these kinds of lists both unabashedly meaningless and impossible to resist. Since no concrete measure exists for determining the best of an art form, I compile my year-end assessments from work that falls into one of two buckets: Either the film?s comprehensive directorial composition is so superb that it should be recognized for its technical mastery, or its storytelling, performances and/or entertainment value lodged in my memory for an unusually prolonged period of time as I mulled its ethical implications or marveled at its invention.

These are the only movies (and one TV show) that fit those criteria for me in 2012:

?Beasts of the Southern Wild?
Benh Zeitlin?s debut has the enduring weight of a modern myth and is the rare example of a film that truly shows a cinematic world never seen before.

"Polisse" Sundance Selects

?Breaking Bad? Season Five
Vince Gilligan?s grim serial remains as cinematic, engaging and shocking as any of the best films released this year.

?Compliance?
In its astounding pacing and performances, this real-life story from Craig Zobel is filled with an existential dread I still carry around a year after seeing it at Sundance.

?Django Unchained?
For a film with a few obvious problems, Tarantino?s latest includes wonders of suspense, dialogue and framing, as well as sublimely unpredictable performances, that match his best work.

?The Master?
This film cannot be categorized or described in any way, and for that I will forever be grateful to filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. Plus, Joaquin Phoenix proves yet again that he is the most inventive, riveting, transformative, committed actor of the last 25 years.

Anne Hathaway?s performance of ?I Dreamed a Dream? in ?Les Miserables?
She?s breathtaking throughout the film, but her one-take acting/songcraft in this sequence destroyed me. I still see the rawness of her despair when I close my eyes.

?People Like Us?
Yes, this film from blockbuster stylists Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci is a conventional family drama in many respects, but the final, earned reveal had me bursting into tears.

?Polisse?
I saw this messy, melodramatic, fact-based drama about the lives of French policemen assigned to the juvenile division at Cannes in 2011, but it wasn?t released in the States until this year and it?s stuck with me just as long. There?s just something stirring about looking long and hard at the personal effects on flawed people who keep fighting the good fight even as they lose more battles than they win.

?Silver Linings Playbook?
Like Paul Thomas Anderson, David O. Russell always surprises and nearly as often delivers. With ?Playbook,? Russell takes the hoary conventions of the romantic comedy and makes them resolutely his to tell a delightful story that is immediately recognizable, full of believable drama and borderline crazy.

?West of Memphis?
Like many people, I?ve followed the story of the West Memphis Three with horrified fascination since Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky?s first ?Paradise Lost? documentary in 1996, and Amy Berg here gives the whole tragic story both a definitive telling and a (mostly) satisfying ending.

1. "Zero Dark Thirty"
Following ?The Hurt Locker,? Kathryn Bigelow is back with her best film yet, a harrowing and ultimately solemn study of one woman?s obsessive mission to hunt down Osama Bin Laden. Bigelow, re-teaming with her ?Hurt Locker? screenwriter Mark Boal, isn?t out to prove that torture works despite what many want you believe -- they're in it to relay the enormous amount of effort that went into the manhunt, and the toll it took on those involved. I saw it a month ago and I still can't shake the experience off. Nor do I want to.

2. "Silver Linings Playbook"
David O. Russell's latest might be manic and unpredictable, but one thing it's not? Boring. No film left me on a high more than "Silver Linings Playbook." Every joke landed. Not one performance rang false. Every tear was earned. This coming from a guy who didn't even know who the Philadelphia Eagles were before seeing this movie.

3. "Holy Motors"
More a series of strung-together beguiling shorts than a feature film, Leos Carax's "Holy Motors" out-'Lynched' Lynch -- it perplexed me, disturbed me, wowed me and made me laugh, all in equal measure.

4. "Bachelorette"
Playwright-turned-filmmaker Leslye Headland mines laughs out of date rape, liberal cocaine use and fat slurs in her debut feature "Bachelorette." And guess what -- it's fucking hilarious. Kirsten Dunst has never been meaner, and I love her for it.

5. "The Master"
The most confounding of Paul Thomas Anderson's films is also his most beautiful (in glorious 70mm) and provoking. Joaquin Phoenix floored me with a performance that rivals the best work of Marlon Brando. He's that good.

6. "Beasts of the Southern Wild"
There are a slew of reasons why Behn Zeitlin's debut moved me more than any film this year, but chief among them is the fact that it was made at all. Working with a then-six-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis as his lead star and under the constraints of a shoestring budget, Zeitlin managed to craft a deeply felt epic that transported me.

7. "Cloud Atlas"
For a film that runs close to three hours long and spans from the nineteenth century to a post-apocalyptic future, "Cloud Atlas" is remarkably easy to follow and supremely entertaining. I've never read David Mitchell's book, so I can't gauge whether it does its source material justice. But as a film, it works.

8. "How to Survive a Plague"
David France does a tremendous job of distilling the work of AIDS activists during the worst of the plague years in the 1980s and '90s into a stirring, upsetting and ultimately inspiring documentary.

9. "On the Road"
Watching this Walter Salles-Jose Rivera adaptation of Jack Kerouac?s Beat bible ?On The Road? was akin to sitting in on a drawn-out jazz riff played by one of the greats. It?s loose, limber, sexy as hell and runs on for a bit too long, but the energy Salles conjures up is infectious.

10. "Life of Pi"
Sure, the book-ended structure is flawed, but the meat of the story that takes place at sea with Pi and Richard Parker the tiger left my jaw on the floor. I haven't been this awestruck since James Cameron took me to Pandora.

Malawi analysts look for improved politics, economy in 2013 ...

By Lameck Massina, VOA

Email This Post?Email This Post

Malawi ?political scientists and human rights campaigners are looking back at 2012 as a year of both progress and setbacks. Over the past 12 months, Malawi gained its first woman president after the death of president Bingu wa Mutharika.

And, though the economy grew slowly, there was a return of donors who had withdrawn aid in protest over Mutharika?s human rights and governance policies.

Mustapha Hussein, a political scientist at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi in Zomba, says ?there have been ups and downs and some negative things as well as positive things. On the positive side, the current government [of President Joyce Banda] has tried to stabilize the political environment. Politically, Malawi can be said to be stable. Unlike Bingu?s regime, there are no tensions between or among parties or between government and its citizens.?

Cry Bingu wa Mutharika: Hussein says Mutharika?s death?gave hope for changes for both on the political front as well as on the economic front.

Hussein says despite the stable political atmosphere, the country has not been faring well on the economic front.

?The issue of devaluation and floatation of the kwacha,? he says, ?has led to price increases that are affecting the disposable income of the people. They are suffering economically and the economic?status?of Malawi is fragile.?

Hussein says the change in the country?s top leadership helped calm the country?s contentious political atmosphere.

?The death of Bingu wa Mutharika was a sad occasion,? he says, ?but at the same time, it gave hope for changes for both on the political front as well as on the economic front.? Prior to that there were political tensions; there were misunderstandings between the government and civil society which culminated in the demonstration in July (2011) where we lost lives.?

However some Malawians have been accusing human rights groups of deliberately muting their criticisms of the new administration. They say the administration has failed to respond to consumers affected by currency devaluation and price hikes.

But human rights activist Billy Banda, who is the executive director for a rights lobby group Malawi Watch, says they were silent because they wanted to build support for the new government considering the many problems it had inherited.

?We were not deliberately keeping quiet,? he says, ?but were lobbying silently so that the new administration [with its difficulties] ?would be given sufficient support. But by giving support, that does not necessarily mean that were condoning the current administration.? We are urging the administration to open a?window?of interaction so that whenever people raise concerns they should take heed.?

In her Christmas?address?to the nation,President Joyce Banda cited the country?s struggling economy and asked Malawians to remain patient.? She did so amid threats of protests by the Consumers Association of Malawi over the rising cost of imported fuel and farm inputs.? They?ve contributed to a drop in living standards.

Analysts say the success of the new year depends in part on whether the government?s austerity measures ? blamed by some for increasing hardships ? can help turn around the economy.

China Doubles Down on Real-Name Web Registration

The Great Firewall of China might start requiring ID for admittance. On Monday, China's National People's Congress began discussing a draft decision that would force Internet users to use their real names in order to register for services. The draft decision is, depending on your perspective, a way to protect personal information online, or yet another move by China to restrict freedom of information.

Canon shutters the EOS 5D Mark II, wheel continues to turn

Given the advent of the EOS 5D Mark III, it's hardly a surprise to see that the Mark II has been quietly moved to Canon's retired list. The full-frame DSLR was famous for its HD video prowess and was quickly adopted by Hollywood, where it was used to film an entire episode of House back in 2010. While the spirit of the 5D lives on in the latest revision, the old dog most definitely deserves a toast 'round the fire.

Pakistan's loneliest church celebrates Christmas in Taliban country

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - This Christmas, pastor Nazir Alam will stoke up a fire, lay a fresh cloth on the altar and welcome parishioners as they arrive at his church in Waziristan, a Pakistani tribal area known as an al-Qaeda haven.

"The lights are all up, and the choir boys are ready. The church is looking its best," said 60-year-old Alam, a former missionary who has celebrated his last ten Christmases there. "There's not much left to do but to pray and rejoice."

Outsiders might see little cause for joy. Pakistan is the sixth most dangerous country in the world for minorities, says London-based watchdog Minority Rights Group International. Christians, Shiite Muslims and Ahmadis are victims of a rising tide of deadly attacks.

But Alam's church, and the homes of most of his 200 parishioners, are nestled inside a Pakistani army base in South Waziristan, a mountainous region that was a hotbed of militancy until a military offensive in 2009.

"When the U.S. went into Kabul, things became bad for everyone. But we are safe here. The army protects us," says Shaan Masih, who helps clean the church and likes to play the drums and sing carols.

For two decades, the church was little more than a room and the tiny community worshipped there under light protection. In 2009, the army set up a base in South Waziristan as part of the offensive against the insurgency and invited the church inside.

"It was a longstanding demand of the community to be given a proper space," Col. Atif Ali, a military officer, told Reuters during a rare trip to the region arranged by the military.

Many of the Christians work for the army in clerical or domestic positions. So far, they have been sheltered from the bombings, raids and drone strikes, violence that rocks the region on an almost daily basis.

Less than a 100 miles away lies North Waziristan on the border with Afghanistan and one of the last areas controlled by the Pakistani Taliban.

The United States has repeatedly urged Pakistan to launch an operation against militants sheltered there including remnants of al Qaeda and Pakistani groups targeting the nation's minorities.

Pakistan says it is doing everything it can to fight the militancy and needs to consolidate the campaign in South Waziristan before opening a new front.

FRESHLY PAINTED

The small blue and white church building has been freshly painted and the main hall covered in new ceramic tiles. A small chandelier hangs from the ceiling and a cloth spread over the altar reads: "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

The church's gratitude to the army is expressed in a sign outside thanking Ali for his help with the renovation.

"Now it is much easier and convenient for them to worship. The new building is close to their homes. They are very happy with us," he said.

While Christians elsewhere in the country are lowering their profile, community members here mix freely with their Muslim neighbors. Their children attend the same schools and neighbors go to each others' weddings and funerals.

When five Christians from Waziristan were kidnapped by the Taliban on their way to the plains of Punjab in 2009, pressure from the army and the community helped free them.

"There are lots of Muslims in our neighborhood," said 30-year-old Saleem Masih, another church helper. "We take part in each other's happiness and sorrow. Christmas is coming. You'll see the Muslims will join us."

Relations between Pakistan's Christians and Muslims are not always so harmonious. Rimsha Masih, a teenage Christian girl, was accused of blasphemy in Islamabad earlier this year in a case that underlined the climate of fear and suspicion that minorities face.

Masih was eventually cleared of the charges, but many of her neighbors fled their homes and her family is still in hiding. Nine Christians were killed after a similar accusation in 2009 and mobs frequently lynch anyone accused of blasphemy before they can get to court.

That's one reason why Christians in South Waziristan say they feel safer in their army base than living in Pakistan's capital, where they are vulnerable to accusations from anyone who covets their homes or businesses.

But the main reason, says pastor Alam, is their trust in their neighbors, ordinary Muslims who are also living under the shadow of war.

"If there is one person who kills, there are also so many who protect. We couldn't live here if Muslims didn't give us protection," said Alam.

"Don't forget: where there is bad, there is always good also."

FDA warns doctors of counterfeit Botox

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal regulators have warned more than 350 medical practices that Botox they may have received from a Canadian supplier is unapproved and could be counterfeit or unsafe.

The Food and Drug Administration said in a letter sent last month and released last week that batches of the wrinkle treatment shipped by suppliers owned by pharmacy Canada Drugs have not been approved by the FDA and that the agency cannot assure their effectiveness or their safety.

The FDA said Canada Drugs was previously tied to shipping unapproved and counterfeit cancer drugs.

How to Ease Wrist Pains with Orthopedic Wrist Braces - Health Guide

Human hands are often ignored or taken for granted. After all it is just an appendage and accidents can?t be life threatening. Those who have suffered from accidents that resulted to injuries are the ones who understand the impact of having dysfunctional hands. Imagine the work that can?t be done.

Wrist injuries and pain are common because of many risks. Though there are treatments and helps available, it can reduce productivity. Orthopedic wrist braces are a big help to restore functionality. So, let us take a look at what it can do for you.

Understanding the Wrist

The wrist or carpal is made up of eight tiny bones that support a tube called the carpal tunnel. It has tendons and nerve, and is protected by a ligament to secure it. Even without injuries, repetitive motions can cause serious pain that can prove to be distracting when doing same motions. This is the carpal tunnel syndrome. Osteoporosis can also make the bones fragile that leads to fractures. The other common causes of pain include tendinitis, arthritis, sprains and strains as well as gout and pseudogout.

Treating wrist pain is difficult because diagnosing the causes can be complicated due to structural and biomechanical properties of the ulnar wrist. The advances in imaging techniques can provide invaluable help, but there are cases when even these can?t help too. Hence, doctors still go back to traditional methods like physical examination, radiography and, of course, history taking.

The Treatments for Wrist Pain

There are ways to treat wrist pain ? natural solutions (home solutions and lifestyle change) physical therapies, medication, and complementary alternative medicine (CAM). In severe cases of wrist pain, joint replacement therapy is considered when painful causes fail to respond to all the other treatments.

If the cause of the wrist pain is repetitive motions, the most obvious solution is avoidance of the said motion. This poses problem, however, when it is related to a job that people do. Bracing it up using bandage can help. A stiffer brace that your orthopedic doctor can prescribe is orthopedic wrist braces.

How Orthopedic Wrist Braces Work

While using natural solutions, medications, CAM and physical therapy, wrists need to be supported because you will continually use your hands. There is a wide range of supports or braces that you can use. Choosing the right brace is important to relieve the pain and at the same time to be able to continue using your hands to do work. What do you need to consider in choosing the right pair of braces?

? Pick lightweight, but durable material. It must be made of a material that can provide warmth, compression, and support. If you are into active sports, you need something that will provide maximum support. Getting a prescription and having it customized is a good solution.

? If you need a brace that must allow you to grasp and hold objects, check out those styles that can allow the kind of movement that you do most of the time. There are indeed many variations and styles available these days for about every need and use. Check these online for more information. Buying the right one the first time can save you money, time, and worsening wrist problem and pain.

? Check out the latest innovations with unique designs intended for special purposes. Some innovations have: a shape that keeps the wrist in an orthopedically correct angle, with strong and stiff outer layer that effectively compresses wrist bones; a form that ensure perfect fit, and an inner foam that absorbs moisture.

Who likes to be bothered with pain when doing work? It is most important for you to keep your wrist healthy with the right diet, exercise, and lifestyle. Nevertheless, when the use of your wrist is inevitably linked to a job, it may be more complicated. Using orthopedic wrist braces can prevent further wrist injuries and is just the right defense for you.
