Sinead O'Connor: crack cocaine ended 16-day marriage (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Move over, Whitney and Bobby.

Sinead O'Connor is wasting no time elaborating on the reasons why she broke up with her husband after 16 days of marriage. One of them? Crack cocaine.

The Irish songstress previously revealed she and fourth husband Barry Herridge went on a search for marijuana on the night of their wedding in Las Vegas.

It seems the singer's decision to bring her new husband, a drug-abuse counselor, along for a marijuana search in a seedy portion of Las Vegas on the night of their wedding wasn't such a great call.

In fact, the way O'Connor tells it, the newlyweds ended up with a drug somewhat harder than pot.

Elaborating on the "wild ride," she told British tabloid The Sun: "We ended up in a cab in some place that was quite dangerous. I wasn't scared -- but a drugs counselor. What was I thinking?

"Then I was handed a load of crack," she added. "Barry was very frightened -- that kind of messed everything up a bit, really."

Crack aside, it doesn't sound like the marriage was meant to last anyway.

"It felt like I was living in a coffin," she also told The Sun. "It was going to be a coffin for both of us, and I saw him crushed. The whole reason I ended it was out of respect and love for the man."

It seems that the experience has crushed O'Connor too -- or damaged her libido, at least. The singer -- who famously went hunting for "a very sweet sex-starved man" earlier this year -- said she doesn't plan to date anyone for awhile.

Wall St rises, on track for slim gains in 2011 (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. stocks rallied on Thursday, moving the S&P 500 back in positive territory for 2011 ahead of the last trading day of the year, on more positive signals on the U.S. economy.

The S&P 500 edged above its 200-day moving average, a key measure of the market's long-term momentum, but scant volume increased volatility, and made the gains harder to trust.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis has been the primary concern for U.S. investors in 2011. Mixed results on an auction of long-term Italian bonds was another sign bond markets remain worried about the euro zone.

With trading thin, the only bit of suspense left for U.S. investors is whether the S&P 500 will end positive for 2011 or not. It is now up 0.4 percent for the year, the closest it has been to unchanged for a year since 1970.

"Equities are gravitating towards that 1,260 mark on the S&P to get the end of the year in the green," said Joe Cusick, senior market analyst at optionsXpress.com in Chicago.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) shot up 135.63 points, or 1.12 percent, to 12,287.04 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) gained 13.38 points, or 1.07 percent, to 1,263.02. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) advanced 23.76 points, or 0.92 percent, to 2,613.74.

Banks were the biggest gainers along with commodity-related sectors, which sold off hard on Wednesday. JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) gained 2.4 percent to $33.42. The S&P financial index (.GSPF) rose 1.6 percent, while the capital goods sector (.GSPIC) added 1.3 percent. Shares of Dow component Caterpillar (CAT.N) advanced 1.4 percent to $90.58 while Alcoa (AA.N), another Dow stock, rose 1.3 percent to $8.63.

Cusick added that strength in offensive sectors like banks, materials and industrials "could be a catalyst for stocks to end the year higher."

Italian bond yields, which helped break a five-day rally with a sharp selloff in the last session, eased on Thursday after a debt auction.

Stocks added to gains after the euro erased losses against the dollar, rebounding from a 15-month low in thin trading.

But the yield on 10-year Italian bonds hovered near 7 percent, a level markets see as a danger zone for Italy's government debt.

Pending sales of existing U.S. homes surged to a 1-1/2 year high in November, offering more signs of a tentative housing recovery. That report drove the Dow Jones home builders index (.DJUSHB) up 4.3 percent.

In addition, factory activity kept growing in the U.S. Midwest in December, as purchasing managers reported rising prices and employment, even though production eased slightly.

On the down side, initial claims for jobless benefits rose more than expected, giving a mixed labor picture, but investors said the trend was still lower.

Recent economic data, including reports on housing, have been largely positive, contributing to stocks' gains over the past month and bolstering the view that economic growth is picking up steam.

"We have seen a pretty encouraging trend in the U.S. economic data over the last two months," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer of OakBrook Investments in Lisle, Illinois. "If that trend continues, that will provide good support and perhaps some upward momentum."

The next big test for markets in terms of U.S. economic data will be the December payrolls report at the end of next week.

For the year, the Dow is up 6.1 percent and the S&P 500 is up 0.4 percent, while the Nasdaq is down 1.5 percent.

Diamond Foods Inc (DMND.O) shares rose 7.2 percent to $31.51 after CNBC reported rumors that high-profile investor David Einhorn may have invested in the company.

About 4.16 billion shares exchanged hands on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and the Nasdaq, well below the year's daily average of about 7.9 billion shares. On the NYSE, four stocks rose for every one that fell. On the Nasdaq, advancers beat decliners by a ratio of more than 2 to 1.

Payton not divulging plan for Brees in finale (AP)

METAIRIE, La. ? A day after Sean Payton helped Drew Brees break the NFL's single-season passing record the coach wouldn't divulge whether he'd enable his star quarterback to maintain that distinction.

With 5,087 yards passing this season after Monday night's victory over Atlanta, Brees enters the final week of the season 190 yards ahead of New England's Tom Brady. Yet the Saints' regular-season finale may not matter in terms of playoff seeding, meaning the prudent choice for Payton could be to rest Brees for much of Sunday's game against Carolina.

The Patriots, by contrast, need to beat Buffalo to ensure they'll have the top seed in the AFC, and Brady has proven time and again he can put up a lot of yards in a single game. He had a season-high 517 yards against Miami in Week 1 and threw for 423 against San Diego. The last time New England played Buffalo, Brady threw for 387 yards.

So it's not out of the realm of possibility that Brady could finish the season with the passing record Brees now holds, particularly if the Saints' quarterback sits out.

"I'm not really aware of the space between the two. I am probably better off not knowing," Payton said Tuesday of Brees and Brady's yardage totals.

With the playoffs close, Payton said the Saints' priority must be how to "put ourselves in the best position to play well and put ourselves in an opportunity to win a championship."

"That's not always what is popular," the coach added.

Payton pointed out that he heard criticism of his decision during the 2009 season to rest Brees and other key starters in the regular-season finale against Carolina. The Saints lost that game, finishing a season that had started 13-0 on a three-game skid. No team had ever gone into the playoffs on a losing streak that long and won the Super Bowl, but Payton relished the chance to defy history ? and did.

"It was what we needed to do as a team," Payton recalled of his 2009 decision. "You make decisions. They are not always right. You try to make them with the right things to help your team.

"Last night was one of those situations," Payton added, referring to his decision to let Brees throw late in Monday night's game. "This upcoming game will be one of those situations."

Payton has his reasons for being cautious, though. They include bad and relatively fresh memories from the 2010 regular season finale, when then-leading rusher Chris Ivory, emerging tight end Jimmy Graham and starting free safety Malcolm Jenkins all got hurt.

The worst part was that the Saints could not have gained anything in terms of seeding by winning that game because Atlanta also won that day to wrap up the NFC South Division title. The next week, the Saints were bounced from the postseason by Seattle.

"We just have to be smart," Payton said. "We are playing well, with some momentum. Each year is different. We will look at that closely."

Now that New Orleans has clinched the division, this weekend's scenario is similar to last season in that the only way the Saints can improve their seeding is with both a win over the Panthers and a San Francisco loss at St. Louis, which is 2-13. If that happened, the Saints would jump to No. 2 and get a first-round bye and a second-round game at home. That, however, does not appear likely to odds makers, who've made the 49ers 10 1/2-point favorites.

Payton already has made one arguably unconventional move to help Brees set the record. He let his star quarterback keep throwing during the final minutes of Monday night's 45-16 victory over the Falcons to get the 30 yards he needed to surpass Dan Marino's 1984 record of 5,084 yards. The last pass was an otherwise inconsequential 9-yard touchdown to Darren Sproles.

While Payton exposed himself to criticism for running up the score, he said he was comfortable with his decision.

"You go with your gut," Payton said. "I thought it was the right decisions last night. This morning, I thought it was clearly the right decision. I felt overwhelmingly that most people that are involved in this game, and know a little bit about this game, probably felt the same way. The great thing about our game is that you can have an opinion about it."

When Brees came off the field after eclipsing Marino's mark on his last pass of the game, he carried the ball he threw on the history-making completion to Sproles.

Brees then said he wished there was a way to share the ball with his teammates, upon whom he showered credit for helping him succeed.

"I guess we could cut it up and give it to them all," Brees said. "I guess the ball itself is not as important to me as the memory we created, because that is something that will live forever."

The record itself, however, could be gone sooner than later ? unless Payton decides it's something worth fighting for come Sunday.

Avastin Disappoints Against Ovarian Cancer

Flickr user theseoduke

Avastin, the blockbuster drug that just lost approval for treating breast cancer, now looks disappointing against ovarian cancer, too.?

Two studies find that it does not improve survival for most ovarian cancer patients and keeps their disease from worsening for only a few months. And it has more side effects.
??

European regulators approved Avastin for ovarian cancer last week. But the drug?s maker, Genentech, says the results of the studies do not make U.S. approval likely. Without that, insurers may not pay for treatment. Avastin can cost $100,000 a year.
??

Avastin can still be sold for some colon, lung, kidney and brain cancers. The studies on ovarian cancer are in Thursday?s New England Journal of Medicine.

In Iowa, Obama toils while GOP roars, then departs (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? One presidential campaign claims an impressive effort in Iowa this year: eight offices opened, 350,000 phone calls to potential supporters and 1,280 events to recruit and train volunteers.

It's not Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich or Ron Paul. It's Obama for America, the president's re-election campaign, which badly wants to win this battleground state in November, as it did in 2008.

"The Republicans are here today, gone tomorrow," said Obama volunteer Pat Walters, of Johnston, a suburb of Des Moines. "We've been doing this since 2009."

Next Tuesday's Republican caucus has dominated political conversations. Largely overlooked is that Obama is running unopposed in the Democratic caucus the same night.

It's a dramatically different scene from four years ago, when Obama set his course for the White House by beating John Edwards and Hillary Rodham Clinton after months of intense campaigning in Iowa.

Obama can coast as far as this year's nomination is concerned. But Iowa remains a general election swing state, and no one assumes his 9-point win here over John McCain in 2008 will give him a cushion next November.

Obama's campaign never entirely left Iowa or several other competitive states, where he hopes relentless organizing can overcome a weak economy and his mixed record of fulfilling campaign pledges in the face of strong GOP opposition in Congress. If thousands of volunteers flocked to Obama's 2008 campaign, this time he's having to work a bit harder to recruit and energize them.

"People say, `The mood is different this time, it's not the same,'" said Peggy Whitworth, an Obama volunteer in Cedar Rapids. "Well of course it's not the same. But it's not about mood or feeling. It's about the future of the country."

Whitworth, 69, said she joins other Obama volunteers four hours every Tuesday night, and sometimes on other evenings as well, to telephone potential supporters. Many say they will vote for Obama again, she said, and some volunteer to help the campaign. But some are disappointed or angry that the president fell short on campaign promises such as ending the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy, and bringing a greater spirit of bipartisanship to Washington.

"Sometimes they simply want to have someone listen to them," Whitworth said. Most say they will stick with Obama after they've had a chance to vent their frustrations, she said.

Obama lacks some key advantages he enjoyed in 2008. They include a deeply unpopular GOP president who was largely blamed for a faltering economy, and a widespread excitement about Obama's precedent-breaking campaign built on "hope and change."

In exchange, of course, he has the power of the presidency and a well-oiled political organization that has been refining its practices for five years. Obama will raise many millions of dollars, although his eventual Republican opponent may do nearly as well.

Nowhere does Obama have a bigger base to build on than in Iowa, where he campaigned for months in 2007. Romney, Gingrich and other GOP contenders have not made comparable efforts, although they say the economy and other issues will make Obama's task much harder next year.

In activities that rarely compete with the hoopla of the GOP nominating contest, Obama's campaign has placed a handful of paid staffers in each of several key states. They try to leverage their clout by recruiting and training scores of volunteers. The volunteers, in turn, knock on doors, organize house parties and, above all, place phone calls to voters in hopes of identifying likely Obama supporters and tracking them through Election Day.

In a tortoise-versus-hare strategy, Obama supporters hope their steady chugging will build support precinct by precinct, town by town, while Republicans spend resources chasing the nomination for a few more weeks or months. The Republican candidates and their broadcast ads are flooding Iowa this week, but they will abruptly shift to New Hampshire on Jan. 4, the day after the caucuses.

Walters, a 60-year-old insurance executive, said he is a "neighborhood team leader" who helps organize house parties, phone banks and other activities. His chief recruiting tools, he said, involve reminding Iowans of Obama's accomplishments that include expanding medical benefits in the hard-won 2010 overhaul of the nation's health care system.

Walters said he hopes the week-by-week, month-by-month effort will build a strong ground operation to turn out Obama's voters next November. The Republican nominee will have to play catch up, he said.

Obama's ground game "is already in place," Walters said. "It's just a matter of growing it."

Iowa Democratic Chairwoman Chair Sue Dvorsky underscored the methodical nature of the efforts in a conference call with reporters Wednesday.

Since April, she said, "this has been a systematic grassroots effort. The same exact way we did it last time. It isn't very glamorous. It's not a very secret plan. It is voter to voter, one-to-one, then a street, then a precinct, then a county."

Dvorsky said Obama will beam "a live address to Iowa Democrats in every caucus site next Tuesday night.

More bodies found far away from Philippine floods (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Fishermen joined Philippine navy sailors, police and firefighters in an ever wider search for bodies from entire villages swept away in one of the country's worst flash floods. More bodies have washed ashore, pushing the death toll to more than 1,200, an official said Monday.

While more than 60,000 homeless from hundreds of flood-ravaged villages spent a miserable Christmas in jam-packed schools and gymnasiums, search teams retrieved an additional 150 bodies from the sea as far as 60 miles (100 kilometers) from worst-hit Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities, said Benito Ramos, head of the Office of Civil Defense.

He said it would take three to six months to restore some normalcy and construct temporary housing to free up schools that are now serving as refugee camps.

The death toll as of Monday stood at 1,236, with about two-thirds of the bodies unidentified. With more bodies found floating farther away, Ramos said authorities sought the help of fishermen to scour the sea.

"We've stopped counting the missing. There are no accurate figures," Ramos said. "Those recovered, we don't know who they are. We have a system in place so that families can claim them later, based on fingerprints and dental records."

The United Nations last week launched an urgent appeal for $28 million to help an estimated 600,000 affected people, more than half the population of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in the southern Mindanao region.

Despite warnings from forecasters, most were asleep Dec. 16 when a tropical storm made a landfall in a region rarely visited by typhoons. It unleashed more than a month's worth of rainfall in 12 hours, sending walls of water gushing into homes.

Many of the dead were women and children who drowned in their beds. Others scrambled to climb roofs to escape the overflowing rivers and muddy waters that carried dangerous debris and logs from nearby mountains. The logs were still floating off the coast.

President Benigno Aquino III, who banned logging in February following previous flooding deaths that experts say were caused partly by deforestation and soil erosion, has ordered an investigation.

Communist guerrillas in the south canceled Monday's celebration of their movement's 43rd founding anniversary and instead promised to donate money to flood victims and punish multinational companies they accuse of environmental destruction.

Rebel spokesman Jorge Madlos told The Associated Press by telephone that they sought funds for victims from huge pineapple and banana plantations and other companies.

"Some were lukewarm to our call," Madlos said. "That'll be a factor when we decide which ones to punish first for this destruction."

Another factor in the staggering death toll was illegal settlements along Cagayan rivers. Thousands of people lived in shanties on the banks and islands directly along the water's path.

In the evacuation centers, where about a third of the displaced are children, aid workers were providing food, clothes, blankets, bottled water and hygiene kits.

A lack of running water was still a major concern. Many shelters had poor sanitation with open drainage and defecation sites, said Ariel Balofinos, Mindanao manager for Save the Children aid agency.

"Children in particular are susceptible to health threats because immune systems are weak," he said, adding that many youngsters were also traumatized.

"Many children have witnessed friends and family dying. We've come across children who have been orphaned, but the good thing is they have relatives, which is part of the Filipino coping mechanism," he said.

Kate Middleton to Get a Puppy For Christmas!!!

Lucky.

That's all we can say about a report from NBC's Today Show, which discussed what Prince William is going to get Kate Middleton for Christmas, [and] said "the general consensus at this point is that the Duchess of Cambridge is getting a puppy."

Gives new meaning to ruffing it with the in-laws, are we right?!

A Prince William and Kate Middleton Pic

In August, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla adopted a Jack Russell Terrier named Beth from Battersea Dogs Home in London. Queen Elizabeth II is also an animal lover.

Kate Middleton, 29, will spend her first Christmas as a royal with William, also 29, and his entire family at Sandringham manor, the queen's retreat in Norfolk, England.

The royal newlyweds will be joined by Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton, of course, and a little later in the week, they'll spend time with the Middleton family at their residence.

And their newfound four-legged friend, of course. Aww.

NFL Mobile App Headed to Galaxy Nexus on December 22

Update:? One source just reached out to let us know that it may not happen today after all. Could have been pushed to January 4. Feel free to check in 10 minutes or so though.

As many of you know, the NFL Mobile app from Verizon does not currently support the Galaxy Nexus. That should change by December 22 (today) at 2PM Pacific according to a couple of our sources. And if it meets that date, it should have plenty of time to be optimized for that Super Bowl streaming that so many of you plan to take advantage of. Too much sarcasm there? ?

Cheers ___ and ?___!

Students and teachers arrive from Japan tour

MANILA, Philippines ? Some 56 Filipino high school students and five teachers recently arrived from a 13-day cultural tour of Japan as part of the Japan East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths ? American Field Service (JENESYS ? AFS) Programme 2011. The program, implemented in collaboration with the American Field Service (AFS) Intercultural Programs, took participants to Japanese high schools and tourist destinations in various prefectures.

Kiyoshi Takeuchi, director of the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC), encouraged delegates to serve as friendship ambassadors, and to recognize their JENESYS experience as a lifetime commitment in maintaining and promoting amiable relations between the Philippines and Japan.

The JENESYS program is one of several youth exchange programs which aims to promote understanding between Japan and other countries. In April 2012, about 400 Filipino youth will participate in the Disaster Management and Recovery Program and Environment Issues in Japan. They will learn about Japan?s experience in dealing with natural disasters, and witness its ongoing recovery efforts from the earthquake and tsunami.

For details about the program, visit the National Youth Commission website at www.nyc.gov.ph.

MAQUOKETA, Iowa (AP) ? It's usually a low-key, even quiet affair.

Ron Paul enters a room almost furtively, his narrow shoulders hunched as he takes the stage. For 30 minutes, he delivers something close to an academic lecture on monetary policy, the dangers of overseas military entanglements, the power of the free market and, of course, the importance of freedom.

"You have a right to your life, a right to your liberty and the right to the fruits of you labor so you can keep what you earn," he says to cheers.

The crowd ? large by Iowa standards in a Republican presidential race ? listens, rapt. The Texas congressman takes questions and poses for a few photos, then disappears behind a door.

A Paul campaign rally is a decidedly stripped-down affair, with few signs, no theme song and a candidate more comfortable discussing a return to the gold standard than glad-handing. His libertarian message, given little attention nationally for most of his long political career, has struck a chord this year with voters angry over bank bailouts, government dysfunction and the burgeoning federal debt.

Voters seem to like what they hear, and some are even flirting with the notion that this unorthodox congressman could be in the White House. Polls find Paul topping the GOP field in Iowa less than two weeks before the state's kickoff caucuses ? his unconventional campaign attracting a coalition of tea party supporters, students and political independents looking for a candidate who can beat President Barack Obama.

"He's the only consistent conservative out there," said J.C. Weiand, a law student who attended a Paul rally in Fort Madison. "For 30 years, he's been preaching the same message. Now his time has finally come."

Voters largely tuned Paul out in 2008, when he placed a distant fifth in Iowa despite robust fundraising and a small but fiercely loyal grassroots base. Campaigning across eastern Iowa this week, the 76-year old former obstetrician says the political environment has changed over four years.

"The world is a different place, the economy is in a different place and the American people have changed their minds," Paul said to cheers in Maquoketa.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Paul refused to predict whether his campaign could be sustained over the long haul.

"Whether I can maintain it is the big question," Paul told AP. "Are we going to have enough money and do we have enough time? And what about the establishment? I'm attacking their largesse."

Republican operatives have largely dismissed Paul as someone too far outside the mainstream to win the nomination. His rivals for the GOP nomination have largely ignored him, although Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann have criticized his foreign policy views.

Paul's libertarian, isolationist message does often stray far from the traditional Republican playbook.

He rarely mentions Obama at campaign events, blaming both political parties in Washington equally for running up debt.

"Republicans spent money when they didn't have it," he said in Washington, Iowa. "What was it, six or eight years they were in charge? The deficit still went up."

And Paul has doubled down on his criticism of military involvement overseas, even though his views are largely out of step with most GOP voters.

"We're going around aggravating a lot of people, bombing different countries," Paul told a crowd in Dubuque. "Military is militarism, the kind of thing (President Dwight) Eisenhower warned us about. He said watch out for the military industrial complex, they will always have to have an enemy."

As president, Paul says he would cut a staggering $1 trillion from the federal budget, audit and eventually eliminate the Federal Reserve, and shift money from the military budget to Social Security and some children's health programs. His pledge to repeal the Patriot Act draws applause, as does his vow to eliminate the Internal Revenue Service.

To be sure, Paul's campaign hasn't been entirely unconventional.

He's run attack ads against several rivals, especially Newt Gingrich, whom Paul has depicted as trading on contacts he developed as House speaker to enrich himself in the private sector. And Paul has benefited from a well-established network of supporters in Iowa left from his 2008 campaign.

With renewed interest comes renewed scrutiny.

Paul walked out of a CNN interview Thursday when pressed on racially charged statements that appeared in newsletters he published in the early 1990s, when he was on a hiatus from Congress. Paul has disavowed the statements and said he did not know who had penned them.

Confronted by a tearful breast cancer survivor on how he would ensure health insurance companies did not discriminate on the basis of a pre-existing condition, Paul suggested she rely on churches and charitable hospitals to ensure her continued care.

"You can't say to the insurance company, 'You have to insure me no matter what I have, I've had a prior disease,'" Paul said. "It's like me being on the Gulf Coast and not buying wind insurance until the hurricane's right off the coast."

The woman, Danielle Lin, 35, of Iowa City, said she had been ready to caucus for Paul until hearing his answer.

"There has to be a middle ground, there has to be regulation to protect American people from corporations," Lin said. "I love Paul's ideas, but there just has to be someone who gets the human piece of this."

Irish economy slumps as euro debt tensions mount (AP)

BRUSSELS ? European Union officials say that a first draft of a new treaty setting up tighter budget rules for eurozone countries has been sent to governments Friday.

The officials said that formal discussions on the new treaty with delegates from the national governments will start next Tuesday, with a second round of talks scheduled for the first week of January. The officials declined to be named in line with the EU's briefing policy.

The U.K., which was the only European country which has refused to sign up to the new intergovernmental treaty, will have observer status in the talks.

The new rules will apply to eurozone states once nine of the 17 have ratified it, while participating non-euro states can decide whether they want to submit to the new rules.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

DUBLIN (AP) ? Ireland's economy shrank 1.9 percent in the third quarter, an unexpectedly large drop that raised doubts about the country's capacity to meet its deficit-fighting targets through painful cuts.

The report from the Central Statistics Office on Friday dashed forecasts of only a minor drop in economic activity and led a litany of bad financial news across Europe.

Spain's central bank reported that debt levels for the country's 17 regions have soared 22 percent over the past year. In Brussels, EU officials warned that private creditors were resisting EU efforts to write off euro100 billion ($130 billion) in Greek debts.

And in Portugal, the main opposition party refused to support the government's plan to amend the constitution to include a budget limit. All 17 members of the eurozone are supposed to make such commitments as part of the bloc's week-old plan to get its debt crisis under control.

Until now, EU leaders have held up Ireland as an example of how a country can keep growing its economy while simultaneously sucking money out of it through spending cuts and tax hikes. Ireland's economy was performing better than those of Greece and Portugal, the other two European nations to have received an international bailout.

But Ireland, midway through a seven-year deficit-fighting program that requires at least modest growth to meet its targets, said its gross domestic product fell 1.9 percent in the July-September period ? the worst quarterly fall in the eurozone.

Economists had expected a drop of only around 0.5 percent following two quarters of gains.

The third-quarter drop means Irish growth is averaging just 0.7 percent so far this year. Economists said they doubted that Ireland could rebound sufficiently in the current quarter, if at all, to meet the government's modest target of 1 percent GDP growth.

The European Union and International Monetary Fund last year extended a potential euro67.5 billion ($88 billion) line of credit to Ireland. Greece received its own bailout in May 2010, Portugal in April 2011.

As part of its deal, the Irish promised to rein in their deficit to the eurozone's 3 percent limit by 2015. Ireland posted an EU-record deficit of 32 percent of GDP in 2010 but hopes to reduce it to 10.1 percent this year.

All sides agree that Ireland cannot hope to meet the 2015 goal if its economy doesn't grow sufficiently.

Alan McQuaid, chief economist at Bloxham Stockbrokers in Dublin, said Ireland would "do well" to reach 0.5 percent growth this year "given the deteriorating world economic backdrop and the fall-off in global demand."

David Begg, general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions representing about a third of Ireland's 2 million-strong work force, said the government's austerity program was too severe and "making recovery almost impossible."

"No economy can sustain the sort of ongoing damage that is being inflicted on us," Begg said. "The latest figures show, yet again, a big drop in domestic demand while retailers warn of more closures in the new year. We need growth and we need it quickly."

Fergal O'Brien, chief economist at the Irish Business and Employers Confederation that represents 7,500 companies, noted that Irish exports were still growing, while much of the quarterly fall was caused by a 20.9 percent drop in business investment in new equipment.

"It is likely that some firms are slowing investment decisions again due to the deteriorating international outlook," he said.

Ireland's latest austerity plans published last month are based on the presumption that Irish GDP will grow 1.6 percent in 2012 and 2.8 percent annually in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Economists have labeled those figures too optimistic.

Gross national product, meanwhile, fell 2.2 percent, short of expectations for a flat performance. Many economists consider GNP a better barometer of Ireland's economic health because it excludes the largely expatriated profits of nearly 1,000 foreign companies operating in the country.

Ireland this year is spending euro57 billion ($74.5 billion) ? including more than euro10 billion ($13 billion) in aid to its five nationalized banks ? but collecting barely euro34 billion ($44 billion) in taxes.

To try to reduce the gap, the government is imposing euro2.2 billion ($2.9 billion) in 2012 spending cuts and raising euro1 billion ($1.3 billion) in extra taxes, including a 2-point hike in sales tax to 23 percent and a new national property tax.

EU heavyweight France also sought to come to grips with a new report putting the country on course for renewed recession.

The French statistics agency Insee forecast Thursday night that the country's economy would decline for the last two quarters of 2011 and the first quarter of 2012 and resume weak growth only thereafter.

Insee said it expects the eurozone as a whole to experience "a short recessive episode" over the winter, and cautioned that market volatility made such predictions difficult.

France has been bracing for a potential downgrade of its top AAA credit rating. Its leaders insisted Friday their nation's economic fundamentals are strong ? and lashed out at Britain, which has been blamed for undermining confidence in Europe's efforts to tame the eurozone debt crisis.

"We would prefer to be French right now than British in terms of the economy," French Finance Minister Francois Baroin told Europe-1 radio.

Baroin described France's banks as "among the most resistant in the world" and called Britain's economy "worrying." He declined to elaborate.

Earlier this week France's central bank governor, Christian Noyer, told the French daily Le Telegramme that Britain should be at greater risk of losing its AAA rating than France.

He was quoted as saying that Britain suffers from "higher deficits, as much debt, more inflation, and less growth than we do. (Its) credit is collapsing."

Stocks mostly higher on optimism about Europe, US (AP)

Stocks edged higher Friday afternoon as spreading optimism about the U.S. economy boosted companies that benefit from broad economic growth. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion plunged after slashing its forecast for holiday sales.

The Dow Jones industrial average inched up 9 points, or 0.1 percent, to 11,877 as of 1:45 p.m. It had been up 99 points earlier. Most of the 30 stocks in the Dow rose, led by Home Depot Inc. with a 2.6 percent gain.

Materials and industrial companies rose, signaling that traders expect the economic recovery to remain on track. The Dow Jones industrial average broke a three-day slump Thursday after a report showing sharply fewer layoffs and signals that business conditions for manufacturers are improving.

Utility and telecommunications companies lagged the market as traders sold companies considered safer when the economy is weak.

Proposed spending cuts in Italy also soothed fears about the threat posed by Europe's debt crisis. A flat reading on U.S. inflation sent bond yields lower.

Some analysts believe nervousness about Europe this fall and winter pushed stock prices lower than their fair value. Investment adviser Uri Landesman, president of Platinum Partners, expects stocks to rise into next year because of the growing likelihood that economic news and European headlines will remain positive.

"The odds are, the news is going to be better than the market is discounting," Landesman said. He said the market is near the low end of its recent trading range, and a dose of positive news could set off a mini-rally. Any market moves next week could be sharp as trading volume thins out before the Christmas holiday, Landesman said.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 4, or 0.4 percent, to 1,220 as of 1:45 p.m. The Nasdaq composite index rose 14, or 0.6 percent, to 2,555.

The gains were broad. Seven of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index rose, led by materials and industrial companies. U.S. factories in some regions have seen shipments and orders rise this month, according to two surveys released Wednesday. Materials companies are benefiting from soaring commodity prices.

Online game developer Zynga Inc. fell 10 percent in its first hours of trading on the Nasdaq. The maker of Farmville's initial public offering was priced late Thursday at $10 per share, raising $1 billion. That means the San Francisco company can boast the biggest Internet IPO since Google Inc. first offered shares in 2004.

Research In Motion Ltd. plummeted 11 percent after the company said late Thursday that new phones seen as critical to its future will be delayed until late next year. RIM also is taking a big loss on unsold tablet computers and predicted that its BlackBerry sales will fall sharply during the holiday sales season.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note plunged to 1.86 percent from 1.93 percent earlier Friday after the government said consumer prices were unchanged last month, suggesting that inflation remains low. Low inflation makes bonds more attractive because it doesn't diminish the buying power of the fixed return a bond provides over time.

If stocks hold their gains, it will be only their second rise this week. Indexes gained Thursday after positive economic news brought relief to choppy markets. The Dow rose 45 points after separate reports showed sharply fewer layoffs and better business conditions for factories on the Eastern seaboard.

Italy's lower house of parliament approved an austerity package in hopes of lowering the country's escalating borrowing costs. The measures are seen as a crucial step toward soothing fears about Europe. Italy's borrowing costs have risen in recent weeks to levels at which other nations, such as Greece and Portugal, were forced to take bailouts.

The cuts are aimed at persuading bond traders that Italy can emerge from the widening crisis without defaulting on its debts.

Among the other companies making big moves:

? New York-area cable TV provider Cablevision Systems Corp. plunged 15 percent, the most in the S&P 500, following the sudden departure of its chief operating officer, Tom Rutledge.

? Adobe Systems Inc. jumped 8.4 percent, the most in the S&P 500, after the software maker reported earnings and revenues that were far better than what analysts had expected. Analyst Walter Pritchard at Citigroup said the quarter was a "blow-out when most expected weakness."
